Overview

The Rhode Island Energy Supervisor – Physical Trading & Scheduling position, reporting to Manager, Gas Supply, Portfolio Optimization, is responsible for managing the physical trading and daily scheduling of natural gas supplies on upstream interstate pipelines and storage providers to reliably serve the company’s utility customers in accordance with company procedures. In addition, in conjunction with other gas supply team members, the Supervisor – Physical Trading & Scheduling will direct and manage pipeline and storage transactions to optimize the company’s gas supply resource portfolio in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Leverages industry standard applications such as WebICE and ICE Chat to procure supply as needed to serve customer load.

  • Responds to dynamic physical gas market conditions and manages associated reliability and risk concerns.

  • Implements trading strategies to mitigate costs via optimization of otherwise idle capacity or via basis displacement opportunities.

  • Works as primary contact between Front, Middle and Back office for credit, settlement, and other requests.

  • Manages and supervises daily gas scheduling activities including scheduled v. actual flows, changes or cuts to scheduled volumes, and development of tactics to address changes/issues; supervises Gas Transportation Specialists

  • Develop processes and ensure adequate training and personnel development planning and coordination.

  • Knowledge of contractual rights and types of services as defined by the interstate pipeline tariffs and experience with applying those concepts to the scheduling process.

  • Manages nominations and confirmation of natural gas flows on interstate pipeline electronic bulletin boards (“EBBs”) and complies with relevant Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regulations.

  • Responsible for pipeline EBBs and related activities such as capacity release postings associated with interstate pipeline transportation and storage capacity that is available or subject to the company’s mandatory capacity assignment program.

  • Serve as a primary gas procurement departmental contact with Gas Control to ensure reliable and cost-effective deliveries of natural gas in compliance with and in response to gas system operations.

  • Evaluates and communicates to other teams the implications from changes associated with interstate pipeline tariff information, such as contract quantities and terms, fixed and variable charges, fuel percentages, and other surcharges.

  • Manages all scheduling activities and ensures that interstate pipeline tariff information is fully captured, documented, and summarized in the company’s gas management system for accounting and billing purposes.

  • Acts as a primary contact with company’s accounting function in support of month close processes.

  • In conjunction with Manager, Gas Supply, Portfolio Optimization, develop daily and monthly plans to optimize the company’s upstream interstate pipeline transportation and storage contracts.

  • Maintains business relationships with various counterparties to identify opportunities for the company.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, or equivalent combination of education and work experience is required.

  • Minimum five years of trading and scheduling experience for a natural gas market participant.

  • Expertise in trading/procurement and scheduling of natural gas, credit/risk management practices, and scheduling systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with counterparties.

  • Must possess excellent problem solving and analytical skills to work in this data intensive position.

  • Advanced knowledge and utilization of database applications and complex Excel spreadsheet models.

  • Must be willing to have a flexible schedule including weekend and evening hours.

  • Must be willing to provide on-call coverage, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, or equivalent work experience.
