Position Summary

This is the second level of the Renewables Specialist job family. In this role, the Renewables Specialist II provides technical expertise to address complex inverter-based resources (IBR) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) challenges, as well as leadership to oversee and direct work in their area of specialization with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced technical skills and operate with increasing independence, demonstrating the ability to handle unreviewed work effectively. This position involves supporting the Renewables organization's new Advanced Inverter-Based Corrective Maintenance Program and requires travel throughout the Florida Renewables Territory, including obtaining advanced technical training on inverter-based resources from OEMs.The ideal candidate will possess the necessary skills to work independently within established timelines, with guidance provided only for unusual or complex projects. This position plays a vital role in Duke Energy’s Path to Net Zero, offering the incumbent a significant opportunity to contribute to the future of renewable generation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Advanced Level Troubleshooting/Investigations and Supports Associated Repairs

  • Performs data analysis/root cause investigations and responds to IBR-BESS Ops inbox requests from RRE Renewables organizations and internal customers. Performs complex transactional tasks to support daily operations.

  • Use secure applications to troubleshoot, investigate, repair IBS and BESS equipment beyond field technician capabilities.

  • Utilize Data Analytics software to investigate individual and large-scale network issues.

  • Use prioritization protocol to ensure the appropriate action is taken to restore IBRs and BESS equipment.

  • Monitor and maintain downed equipment recoveries related to advanced level equipment malfunction/failure.

  • Coordinate with the Warranty Manager as needed for advanced equipment failure warranty claims.

  • Perform in field oversight of remediation efforts for advanced level IBR and BESS asset repairs

  • Provide input to Project Management & Construction (PMC) organization for new site development, commissioning, and turnover

  • Support project development of end-of-life analysis for IRBs and BESS

Basic/Required Qualifications

Renewables Specialist II

  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Technology, or Other Technical

  • 2 years related work experience

  • In lieu of Associates degree(s) AND 2 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 4 year(s) related work experience

Senior Renewables Specialist

  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Technology, or Other Technical

  • 4 years related work experience

  • In lieu of Associates degree(s) AND 4 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 6 year(s) related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Other Technical

  • In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Proficient in applying principles of project management

  • Demonstrated development of Inverter-Based and BESS technical expertise necessary to analyze and resolve increasingly advanced component and software issues.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills

  • Maintain licenses and maintenance platform access necessary to perform function (annual training and certification)

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and files

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
