The Opportunity

As a Sustainability Strategist , you will have the opportunity to:

  • Be responsible for analyzing, reporting on and driving Black & Veatch's sustainability performance

  • Primarily focus on enhancing the quality and completeness of Black & Veatch’s ESG data to support regulatory compliance and reporting and business decisions to improve carbon, water, waste and nature impacts

  • Work closely with a wide range of groups within the organization, including the Market Sectors, BV Operations, Global Real Estate, Human Resources, the CIO's Office, Marketing and more, to gather data, develop recommendations and implement sustainability performance improvements

  • Support development and implementation of vision and strategies on sustainability related projects

The Team

Key Responsibilities

  • Track, analyze and report on global sustainability metrics including greenhouse gas (GHG) location, market-based emissions and ESG metrics

  • Ensure compliance with applicable frameworks and regulatory requirements

  • Develop content for annual sustainability reports and collaborate with various stakeholders to manage the report development process

  • Support evaluation and prioritization of existing and new actions that improve ESG compliance and reporting ranking and performance

  • Collect, synthesize and report on data measuring performance of existing and new actions against relevant baselines

  • Identify and trouble-shoot/problem solve issues with data or results including validating data and results

  • Support KPI tracking of sustainability data and other sustainability target

  • Support third party assurance for annual GHG emissions, of sustainable operations performance data to meet ESG reporting requirements

  • Support annual public disclosure of sustainable operations performance data to a variety of regulatory and voluntary reporting platforms

  • Support and in some cases lead on day-to-day program and project management for key sustainability workstreams for carbon, energy, water, waste

  • Develop subject-matter expertise on industry best practices around carbon accounting and net zero targets inclusive of Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions and environmental sustainability priorities (i.e. carbon, water, waste, nature)

  • Assist with creation/modification of presentations, spreadsheets, standard operating procedures, and various documentation

  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop training content and programs supporting net zero emissions, waste reduction and water conservation

  • Support employee engagement and knowledge share about sustainability through multiple channels include the BV Sustainability Community Teams channel, Viva engage, and virtual and in-person events

  • Support and drive expanded use of the NetZero Cloud sustainability software platform to calculate BV's carbon footprint and track other sustainability metrics

  • Creation of executive communication through PowerPoint presentations

  • Serve as subject matter expert and provide guidance to teams who are working on sustainability projects for Black & Veatch

Management Responsibilities

Individual Contributor

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in sustainability analysis or related field

  • Experience with relevant analytic techniques (e.g. life-cycle analysis, carbon accounting)

  • Experience and knowledge of decarbonization pathways relevant to global professional services organizations and construction firms

  • A qualification or certification in greenhouse gas accounting (i.e., GHG management institute certification, GHG accounting graduate certificate)

  • Project Management experience (PMP or equivalent a plus)

  • Audit Readiness and remediation experience

  • Strong attention to detail and well-developed project management, process ownership and organizational skills.

  • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic

  • Experience with Greenhouse Gas accounting best practices, protocol standards and GHG emissions reporting

  • Knowledge of global ESG reporting standards and evolving climate regulations

  • Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks such as GRI, CDP, EcoVadis

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Program Management, Strategic Initiatives, Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Consulting, or other related experience

  • Undergraduate degree in sustainability, environmental engineering/science, economics, finance, business, or related fields

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical skills and ability to interpret complex data

  • Strong project and program management skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams and drive outcomes

  • Superb written and oral communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to vertically and horizontally across the organization Demonstrated service excellence and a collaborative style

  • Passion for environmentalism and a basic understanding of sustainability topics and criteria
