Job Description:

NOTE: This position is posted in more than one grade level and will be filled based on commensurate education and/or relevant experience. Job is designated as a Remote position and it is preferable and advantageous for candidate hired to reside in the Columbus, OH area. However, as long as one resides within any of AEP's already established 11 state locations would be considered (no relocation expenses are offered).

Congestion Analyst Senior (grade level 7)

Congestion Analyst Principal (grade level 8)

POSITION SUMMARY:

This individual is mainly responsible for managing or supporting congestion-related business activities in Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) such as Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM), Southwest Power Pool (SPP), and Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). Activities include managing congestion-hedging products such as ARRs (Auction Revenue Rights), FTR' (Financial Transmission Rights), and TCR (Transmission Congestion Rights), performing powerflow analyses, conducting production cost-based simulations, supporting congestion needs in areas of renewable development, unit operation & management, energy trading & power marketing, and regulatory service, and participating in RTO stakeholder meetings for assigned market issues.

This individual must have a solid knowledge of transmission systems and a fluent skill in software one power-flow applications such as PSSE, PowerWorld, TARA, etc. In addition, this individual must have practical experience of conducting power flow studies with transmission cases. Finally, this individual must be able to communicate and present analyses or studies in a clear, concise, and effective manner.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of transmission systems and congestion-hedging products in RTO markets.

  2. Develop, review and present transmission studies/analysis under medium-level guidance.

  3. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and advanced skills in conducting power flow analyses and production cost simulations.

  4. Demonstrate advanced ability to understand and monitor transmission congestion in RTO markets.

  5. Participate in RTO stakeholder meetings.

  6. Demonstrate ability to analyze and create practical solutions to well-defined congestion problems under medium-level guidance.

  7. Complete projects accurately within aggressive deadlines.

  8. Demonstrate clear, effective verbal and written communication skills.

  9. Demonstrate understanding of complex mathematical models and software programming.

Minimum Requirements:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Congestion Analyst (grade 6)

Master degree in Electrical Engineering or Operations Research OR, bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or Operations Research with at least two (2) years of experience in the field of transmission congestion analysis.

Demonstrates proficiency in the application of appropriate analytic methods. Competent in at least one programming language in addition to Microsoft Office applications.

Congestion Analyst Senior (grade 7)

Master degree in Electrical Engineering or operations research with at least for (4) years of experience in the field of transmission study or congestion analysis; OR Bachelor degree in engineering with at least six (6) years of transmission study or congestion analysis. Individuals with a Doctorate degree in engineering or other appropriate technical field may be considered for entry into the organization at this level. Post Doctoral work at a University located in the United States will be considered to be the same qualification as a Doctorate degree.

Understanding of transmission congestion in PJM or SPP is desirable. Demonstrates proficiency in the application of appropriate analytic methods. Demonstrated interest in problem solving and ability to expand analytic skill set. Competent in at least one programming language (such as MATLAB, Python, etc.) in addition to Microsoft Office applications.

Congestion Analyst Principal (grade 8)

Master degree in Electrical Engineering or operations research with at least six (6) years of experience in the field of transmission study or congestion analysis; OR Bachelor degree in engineering with at least eight (8) years of transmission study or congestion analysis. Individuals with a Doctorate degree in engineering or other appropriate technical field with two (2) years of experience in the field of transmission congestion analysis will also be considered to satisfy this requirement. Post Doctoral work at a University located in the United States will be considered to be the same qualification as a Doctorate degree.

Demonstrated interest in problem solving and ability to expand analytic skill set.
