Position Summary:Certified Crane Operator is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems.
Operates boom trucks and cranes.
Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
Does all other related work as required to complete the job.
Inspects the crane or boom truck.
Inspects cribbing and outriggers.
Drives and operates the cranes and boom trucks.
Oversees the set up of the crane or boom truck.
Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized transmission work.
Must possess a valid Class A CDL.
Must possess a crane certified operator’s card.
Must possess a DOT certification.
Reads load charts and rigging.
Knows correct rigging techniques.
Must be willing to learn all aspects of linework.
Must be competent in writing up lift plans.
3-5 years experience required.
5-10 years of experience preferred.
Must be able to travel on short notices, including staying out of town when required.
Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
When not operating the crane or boom truck must assist Foreman and crew with:
o Shovel dirt
o Tamp pole holes
o Frame poles
Able to frequently use hand tools: wrenches, hammer screw drivers
Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
Must be able to work or be exposed to oil, grease, dirt, mud, dust, diesel fuel and fumes on a daily basis.
Must be able to work or be exposed to poison ivy, oak ticks, and snacks on a seasonal basis.
Willing to work over-time when requested.
Must learn the task/duties of a Groundman, Class C Lineman, and Heavy Equipment Operator.
o Stringing overhead wire.
o Setting poles and anchors.
o Assists with installing transformers, lightening arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear.
o Assists in replacing fuses in transformers and clears faulted circuits and systems.
o Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
o Understands proper use of company radio.
o Understands operation of heavy equipment.
o Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
o Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
o Capable of receiving and following directions.
o Capable of learning basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
o Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
o Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
o Must be familiar with induced voltage.
o Capable of assisting with the installation and hook up of a single phase transformer.
o Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
o Understands the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
o Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
o Understands minimum approach distance.
o Capable of checking voltage on transformers.
o Understands flag and tag procedures.
o Capable of installing and removing a service.
o Capable of properly inspecting rubber goods and PPE.
o Understands when to wear personnel protective equipment.
o Capable of making up and using a hand line.
o Understands how and when to use Kellum grips.
o Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
o Capable of learning transmission voltages on a circuit.
o Capable of learning to understand and read blueprints.
o Capable of assisting with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
o Able to work productively from an aerial device.
o Capable of assisting in troubleshooting.
o Able to work alone on de-energized lines.
o Capable of obtaining knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
o Capable of learning and understanding how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
o Able to assist with assembly and erect towers to all heights.
o Able to assist with working from an aerial ladder to catch off and clip in.
o Able to assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
o Able to assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
o Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
o Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
o Must be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
o Understands how to tie various lineman knots.
o Understands proper equipment set-up and grounding procedures.
o Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
o Understands DOT requirements (pre-trip/post trip inspections, etc.).
o Understands basic rigging techniques.
o Possess a basic knowledge on safe use of chain saw, bush axe, etc.
o Understands personal protective equipment requirements and wears PPE when and how it is needed.
o Understands proper use and care of ladders.
o Able to assist in pole framing, setting, and removal.
o Understands how to safely set up a work zone.
o Able to assist with structure assemble and disassembly.
o Possesses a basic working knowledge of de-energized line work.
o Capable of safely setting a pole.
o Possesses a basic knowledge of cover up.
o Possesses knowledge of proper work zone set up.
o Possesses knowledge of pole framing, setting and removal.

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
