AES Clean Energy (AES CE) is seeking a Director of Preconstruction Project Management. The Director of Preconstruction is a vital role focusing on the successful engagement of EPCs for grid-scale renewables projects, including Community and Utility Scale Solar, and Battery Energy Storage Solutions, ultimately ensuring the delivery of safe, timely, cost-effective renewable energy projects. The Director of Preconstruction will report to Senior Director of Preconstruction while leading a team of regionally focused Preconstruction Project Managers and working closely with multiple internal project teams. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the renewable energy industry, including exceptional project management skills, the ability to successfully lead a project team through ambitious environments, construction field experience and process improvement and customer management skills.

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Preconstruction is responsible for leading, supporting, training and managing Preconstruction Project Managers responsible to collaborate optimally with the full Project Team from Early-stage Development through EPC recommendation to Award to:

  • Work with project development teams to support earlier project engagement and coordination efforts to promote effective EPC engagement, contractable bids and efficient transition into execution phase.

  • Work with the Project teams to perform diligence of project information and deliverables to understand, assess and address project maturity, risk and schedule.

  • Understand and organize project details to develop strategy needed for stage diligence.

  • Provide critical connection for internal partners including development, engineering, interconnection, and Execution teams with Capex input support.

  • Coordinate with Development Engineering, Scheduling and Estimating teams to support development and EPC engagement

  • Support and provide critical feedback for major equipment procurement processes

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all parties involved in the development and approval of the project

  • Develop, improve and/or maintain department challenges standards, and processes to support Preconstruction and Organizational efforts.

Responsible for leading the EPC Engagement process with qualified contractors:

  • Lead EPC Engagement planning meetings and review processes with the team.

  • Ensure RFPs effectively establish the basis of scope, performance expectations, critical bid schedule and pricing requirements from contractor/supplier

  • Work with the project collaborators to review and approve components of the bid package, submittals, and decisions through the EPC RFP bid preparation and release process.

  • Manage the contract transition from Preconstruction to the construction execution team

  • Develop supervisory, conflict management, and team building skills among direct reports

  • Foster strong contract administration and construction risk management skills within Preconstruction PMs or equivalent experience

  • Work with Estimating and Project Controls to inform on EPC Solar, BESS, and Solar+BESS market information

  • Support and direct efforts to resolve a range of technical/specialist issues during bid phase

  • Actively identify and manage critical path issues and risks to remove and minimize project impacts

  • Develop sophisticated understanding and application of contract commercial terms

Experience/Qualifications/Education Requirements

  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in project management and procurement in the renewable power and/or heavy construction industry with solar and/or battery storage energy management experience

  • BS or equivalent experience in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, advance study in Project Management desired

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and directing teams across various works streams and multiple projects simultaneously

  • Excellent understanding of project life cycle including feasibility, permitting, real estate, site design, Interconnection processes and EPC contracting

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all interfaces, technical specification and report writing, and presentation skills

  • Excellent personal organization and time management skills proven by clear and effective project plans and the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

  • Solid understanding of project scheduling concepts, techniques, and software such as MS- Project; experience with Primavera P6 a plus.

  • Demonstrates alignment with AES Values

  • Strong computer and analytical skills, proficient with MS Office suite, Quickbase, Box and Procore

  • Willingness to travel up to 15%

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $170.000 and $221.000/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
