Senior Environmental Technician – Industrial Pretreatment

Colorado Springs Utilities Industrial Pretreatment (IPT) section is seeking a Senior Environmental Technician knowledgeable in compliance programs related to wastewater regulations. In this job, your essential responsibilities will be significant industrial user permitting, providing support to sector control programs (such as fat, oil, and grease), sampling, evaluating industrial user surveys, and various other tasks pertaining to the industrial pretreatment program.

Key Responsibilities...

  • Performing industrial permitting activities, including permit drafting, issuance and management, facility inspections, reporting, sampling, identification of non-compliance, enforcement, and providing support to permitted industrial customers

  • Performing sector control program support. May require users to install sector-specific control systems or make changes to methods of waste disposal.

  • Performing investigative field work to pinpoint sources of wastewater pollutants. Evaluating non-domestic users to characterize industrial activities and waste streams. Verifying information provided by industrial users. Documenting findings and communicating with facilities.

  • Recommending and completing program compliance enforcement under the direction of the supervisor.

  • Interfacing with various constituents and providing answers and information regarding program requirements, details, and specifications

  • Installing, programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting IPT’s monitoring, data recording, and automatic sampling equipment

  • Collecting and preserving industrial effluent, wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system samples for the evaluation of wastewater disposal activities within the collection system, to include standard IPT monitoring and investigating abnormal discharges

  • Interpreting data, reviewing, preparing, and analyzing technical reports; maintaining required reports, files, and databases, including data entry and evaluation as well as report management

  • Implementing quality assurance procedures

Who you are...

Most people in this position will have an associate or bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of progressively responsible experience with environmental regulatory work. The ideal candidate will have experience in industrial pretreatment, wastewater compliance, wastewater treatment, or industrial hygiene. Knowledge of manufacturing processes as sources of industrial waste and/or an understanding of wastewater treatment are desired. This job requires acute attention to detail and substantial reading and comprehension skills. Professional writing skills and appropriate use of English grammar are critical. Additionally, part of the role is sampling water and/or wastewater from various sources, and in this process, there will be associated handling of equipment and containers (including but not limited to small sample bottles, 5-gallon carboys, large autosamplers, etc.), as well as moving iron manhole covers; physical exertion, pulling, and lifting is required. The incumbent must be able to perform a full range of body movements and manual dexterity to inspect industrial and commercial facilities, remove and replace manhole covers, install and extract automatic samplers, collect grab samples from industrial/commercial processes, manholes, and surface waters, operate and adjust sampling and field analytical equipment, perform work on a computer, drive Utilities vehicles, and perform other essential functions.
