Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a highly motivated and analytically oriented individual with extensive knowledge of federal and state gas pipeline safety regulations, along with skill in analyzing and interpreting pipeline leak and damage data to ensure the prevention and resolution of pipeline infrastructure problems across Colorado Springs natural gas system.

As a Gas Pipeline Integrity Engineer , you will join the talented team of engineers in the Gas Planning & Design group. Our team is responsible for providing operational support, engineering, planning, design services for Colorado Springs Utilities natural gas distribution infrastructure, comprised of more than 5,000 miles of gas mains and services, and for over 200,000 customers. The work that you do will directly impact the current and future safety and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure. You will be a subject matter expert for the Leak Management Program as part of the Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP). These programs outline how we manage, classify, and resolve gas pipeline leaks, which ensure that Colorado Springs Utilities follows Title 49 CFR Part 192 for gas compliance and safety. You will also become a data guru through analyzing and interpreting gas pipeline leak and damage data to support the safety, integrity, and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure.

You'll make an impact in the following areas...

Supporting Leak Program and DIMP Plans

  • Monitoring Leak Program compliance and hosting monthly Program meetings to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for leak surveys, classifications, re-checks, repairs, and patrolling activities.

  • Developing and maintaining compliance reports and dashboards to monitor Leak Program compliance.

  • Conducting presentations for upper management and engineering staff on all facets of the Leak Management Program.

  • Maintaining Leak Rate Model and assisting with DIMP Risk Model runs to help prioritize pipeline infrastructure issues and projects.

Managing and Trending Leak Data for Services and Mains

  • Identifying trends associated with leaks and recommending additional actions through root-cause analysis.

  • Identifying appropriate leak survey frequencies for mains and services by investigating materials, locations, and cathodic protection statuses.

  • Leading data validation, migration, and programmatic process improvement projects.

  • Reporting historical trends in leak and damage records, assembling Part C of the PHMSA Distribution Annual Report, and establishing metrics to monitor Leak Management Program performance.

  • Assisting with the development, implementation, and maintenance of ESRI GIS-based mobile data collection and applications.

Performing Leaks As-Built Reviews

  • Performing as-built reviews on all projects completed due to leak or damage repair/replacement before jobs are mapped into GIS database.

Supporting GCOM Leak Search Crews

  • Working with and educating leak search, operations, and construction crews on leak causes and data collection and quality.

  • Leading the testing for new leak detection equipment, and interfacing with Asset Management for digitizing results.

Who you are...

You are likely someone who comes with at least five years of in-depth gas distribution or related experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline. Experience with Risk Modeling, ESRI GIS Systems, American Innovations Pipeline Compliance System, and Microsoft Power BI is highly beneficial. A PMP certification and/or registration as a Professional Engineer is also highly valued. General knowledge of distribution pipeline practices, procedures, and operating standards is required, as well as knowledge of applicable federal and state pipeline safety regulations, including Title 49 CFR Part 192. In addition to the technical aspects of this job, you excel at taking initiative and driving projects forward, communicating and sharing information effectively and appropriately, possess sound critical thinking and decision-making ability, and strong interpersonal skills that will allow you to establish effective relationships with internal and external customers.
