This is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures . They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in Duke Energy’s regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, Oh. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations, to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Engineer substations for assigned projects.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program AND/OR state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE). A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of engineering experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering.

  • Proficient in principles of project management.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

  • Experience in the Electric Utility Industry

  • Experience in electric utility substation structural designs

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer

  • Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor

  • Experience with Mathcad

  • Experience with structural modeling software such as RAM Elements, STAAD Pro, or similar

  • Experience with LPILE foundation design software or similar

  • Experience with structural design codes such as ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE MOP 113

  • Demonstrated ability to complete structural steel and reinforced concrete designs

Working Conditions

  • Some travel (<10%) outside geographical area.

  • Office environment with frequent site visits, in various weather conditions.

  • May need to work in confined spaces and/or in noisy work areas. Exposure to potential hazards is commonplace.

  • Exposure to hazards is commonplace. Hazardous areas routinely encountered include open ditches, heavy machinery, excessive noise, vehicle traffic and high voltage equipment.

  • Able to drive personal vehicle or company vehicle.

  • Must have the ability to walk extended distances on various types of terrain.

  • Must have the overall stamina and ability to perform moderate physical activity.

  • Must have the ability to audibly and visually identify the presence of a danger or hazard.

  • Support for Delivery Operations during emergency storm restoration, which could require extended hours working outdoors in any weather condition.
