Position Summary

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.


Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

  • Work closely with PQR&I Planning Governance and Project Management on scope, funding, and execution R&I Programs and special projects.

  • Provide engineering and technical expertise to execute and manage annual Capital and O&M work plans.

  • Manage the replacement of assigned assets.

  • Communicate annual program scope and expected benefits to key stakeholders and provide periodic status reports throughout the year.

  • Recommend facility enhancements by identifying specific conditions that comprise annual work plan to meet future requirements, in accordance with company strategic needs and all applicable regulations and standards (i.e., DCI, TDSIC).

  • Function as sponsor by monitoring spending, program status, budget challenges, and emerging reliability and operational risks and making recommendations for adjustments to work plan units as needed.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.

  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, engineering and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise.

  • Solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision.

  • Apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.

  • Experience using advanced application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering design and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Received a passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Registered Professional Engineer

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Understanding of basic principles of Distribution Engineering and Distribution Operations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

Work Environment:

  • About 10% local travel in OH/KY/IN service territory.

  • Some weekend and overtime work.

  • Flexible work hours based upon business needs (typical work hours 8am-5pm).
