This position can be hired as either an Engineer I or Engineer II depending on experience

Job Summary

The Engineer I and II positions are the entry and intermit levels of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in these Engineer positions solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close / general supervision. An Engineer I / II is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I / II has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. An Engineer II works with greater independence in comparison to an Engineer I.

This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in Duke Energy’s regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, Oh. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new substations. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent construction drawings, permits, bills of material, etc. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple assignments simultaneously. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. The position will also provide design support to field personnel during project implementation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

    Basic Qualifications

    Engineer I

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

    Engineer II

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 2 years minimum required related experience

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer

  • Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor

  • Experience with grounding system design software such as WinIGS, CDEGS, etc.

  • Experience with lightning protection design software / techniques

  • Experience with substation design codes such as NESC, IEEE Std. 998, IEEE Std. C37.30, IEEE Std. 80, etc.

  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI

  • Experience with Programming

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
