WEC Business Services, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, is seeking a Senior Communications Specialist - Media Relations for our Chicago, IL location. The position will support Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas – natural gas utilities serving more than 1 million customers in Chicago and the northern suburbs – and report to the Director, Corporate Communications.
The Sr. Communications Specialist uses cost-effective strategies to develop and implement a variety of communications activities that support the company’s business objectives, acting as key media contact and company spokesperson. The individual must appropriately and effectively position the company with a variety of target audiences through communications with local, state, and national media. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong writing and editing expertise for both traditional and social media platforms and is capable of leading and/or supporting the development and execution of strategic communication plans.
Essential functions include:
Effectively positions the company through the news media by developing appropriate response strategies to media inquiries, anticipating potential media issues, establishing working relationships with members of the media and proactively seeking opportunities to improve the company’s reputation and brand.
In coordination with the media relations team, responsible for managing incoming inquiries including working with appropriate subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop response.
Develops news releases, media statements, background materials, and external narratives to support responses.
Works as part of a team with others in the company and in the Communications Department, or alone as circumstances warrant to implement communication programs.
Ensures consistency and alignment with corporate strategies and messages.
Ensures customer satisfaction through anticipation and understanding of customer needs.
Provides counsel to others in the company on communications issues.
Serve as key contact and on camera spokesperson for the local market media, especially on critical or sensitive issues.
Presents and communicates outputs and issues in a manner that is clear and usable to clients, in either a one-on-one or a group setting.
Leads medium to large projects and/or communication campaigns, requiring advanced project management skills.
Coordinates and delivers communications during high profile and/or crisis events.
B.A./B.S. in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, English or business or related degree is required.
7+ years’ experience in Communications or a related field.
Must have outstanding written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Works well under pressure to meet deadlines.
Excellent judgment and discretion to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Available for on-call and after-hours assignments.
Must be versatile and flexible, able to move smoothly between diverse assignments.
Able to work effectively with all levels of management.
Valid driver’s license.
- Experience with social media and media relations, including on the record experience with media.
