The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fluid mechanics, cavitation and flow induced vibrations, hydro turbine performance testing and data analysis for electrical power generating plants. The candidate should also have a good working knowledge of hydro plant condition monitoring, plant optimization, and plant scheduling. The candidate should have a background in mechanical vibrations of rotating equipment and a thorough understanding of fluid flow measurement techniques and instrumentation. The candidate should have an understanding of the effect on energy production produced by changes in hydro plant equipment or changes in hydro plant operations. The candidate should also be familiar with techniques for scaling up physical model data to prototype operating characteristics. This position will be working on a team responsible for monitoring the fleet of TVA hydro turbines, looking for operating and performance anomalies and supporting troubleshooting.

Job Summary

  • As the staff specialist, works with the Sr. Program Mgr to develop plans and criteria for performance, monitoring, diagnostic and analytics, as well as identification and utilization of new technologies.

  • Performs as a staff advisor and technical consultant on issues related to Advanced Pattern Recognition, Thermal and Hydro Performance, and additional monitoring and analytics techniques.

  • Advises others how to interpret, adapt and apply engineering standards, principles and techniques to problems and issues involving real time computer/control systems, including digital control systems, that are unique and precedent setting and for which procedural guidance is not available.

  • May direct or coordinate the work of a small staff of multidiscipline engineers, systems analysts, programmer analysts, technicians and others who assist in specific projects.

  • Provides guidance, support and governance for monitoring, diagnostic, analytics and performance projects and programs.

Supervision Received

Supervision and guidance relate to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts and policies. Guidance is broad and subject to interpretation for application. Consults with Sr. Program Manager or Senior Manager concerning unusual problems

Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)

Demonstrated expertise and consulting skills in the following as applied to real time computer system and related technical/scientific applications.

System specification and design; Software code management/configuration control; System configuration and integration; Software quality assurance; System development and maintenance; Software/system documentation (including preparation: System analysis and troubleshooting; Hardware installation, test, and maintenance; System testing (test case development); Computer system networks; System installation; Equipment interface specification, development, debug.

Advanced proficiency in the following typically used in real time computer systems and related technical applications in power generating stations:

Programming languages and operating system software; Software tools used for software development and code management; System hardware; Microprocessor based systems/Intelligent (smart) systems.

Advanced proficiency in independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering methods/procedures to resolve complex engineering problems.

Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical, mechanical, nuclear or chemical engineering from an accredited curriculum.

Several years of professional engineering experience in the area of performance with several years experience with monitoring and diagnostics of generation equipment.

Professional engineering license and membership in a professional engineering society is desirable.

Must be able and willing to assume “on-call” rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing project assignments.
