This Senior Engineering Technologist position will provide support to relay crews for on-site task specific relay training and promotional testing. The positon will conduct cause analysis and event follow up as determined by management. The incumbent will develop and maintain a system to track and ensure relay test equipment calibration. The position will be responsible for new test equipment evaluation and purchasing. Incumbents are expected to have advanced relay commissioning and maintenance skills and have the ability to provide leadership and work independently.


  • Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), OR 8+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), OR 12+ years equivalent experience without a degree.


  • Expert in protective Relay construction and maintenance with 10 years of experience

  • Expert at both Electromechanically and Microprocessor relays.

  • A strong desire to train and share technician experience and expertise.

  • Willingness to dive into technical issues to find cause and resolution.

Duties & Responsibilities

With minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work:

  • Act as the relay training course manager.

  • Track progress and completion of relay technician proficiency and criterion testing to ensure advancement through the relay department hierarchy.

  • Act as an adjunct trainer for relay topics.

  • Provide relay technical expertise and on-site support and training for protection and control relays, power line carrier, SCADA and digital fault recorders to ensure relay technicians have a diverse understanding necessary to be successful.

  • Communicate with test equipment venders to acquire RMA’s for repair and calibration.

  • Track, ship and receive broken/repaired test equipment.

  • Evaluate and purchase new test equipment.

  • Track test equipment firmware and upgrades.

  • Participate in the RCA process as determined by management.

  • Participate in ACA’s for relay events.

  • Complete BCA/one-pagers for all relay related events.

  • Collaborate with peer engineering technologists and relay technicians to update and improve the CST work practice manual to include detailed methods to drive consistency throughout the region.

  • Participate in stand up meetings and present technical material to inform other Engineering Technologists and Technicians on lessons learned from causes analysis reports from all regions.

  • Strive to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skill and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
