Are you ready to embark on a rewarding career as a Probabilistic Risk Assessment Engineer, helping Duke Energy achieve a clean energy future? Duke Energy’s 11 operating nuclear reactors make Duke a clean energy leader in the electricity generation industry. Duke operates both pressurized water and boiling water reactors. Duke maintains a variety of PRA models. Depending on the plant, these models include Internal Events, Internal Flood, Fire, High Winds, Seismic, and External Flood.

Duke Energy is seeking highly motivated candidates at the Engineer III and/or Senior Engineer levels for the PRA Applications Team. This team is responsible for exercising Duke’s PRA models (consisting of fault tree and data analysis (CAFTA,) Human Reliability Analysis (HRA Calculator,) accident analysis (MAAP), among others) to adopt and support risk-informed applications such as 10CFR50.69, Surveillance Frequency Control Program, and Risk Informed Completion Times program, as well as Maintenance Rule and Mitigating Systems Performance Indicators.

Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of probabilistic risk assessment with general supervision. The successful candidate is expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Senior Nuclear Engineer (BS Engineering) is the career level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of probabilistic risk assessment with little supervision. The successful candidate is expected to have advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Individuals selected are expected to manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with little to minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures involved with Probabilistic Risk Assessment processes. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve to accomplish business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

Ideal candidates prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity. As such, the individual must be able to develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. The individual needs to have the ability to positively interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Ideal candidates demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

  • 4-6 years of engineering experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Sr Nuclear Engineer

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven discipline to develop and adhere to a schedule, timeframe, and meet deliverables/commitments.

  • Proven reputation for being proactive, looking ahead, identifying potential issues, and developing solutions.

  • Experience using Probabilistic Risk Assessment software, especially CAFTA and/or PHOENIX.

  • Experience with Boolean logic development and/or analysis with Large fault trees.

  • Registered Professional Engineer.

  • Experience in the utility industry, at a nuclear power generation site.

  • Familiarity with the basic systems of a BWR or PWR.

  • Experience within plant Operations or similar role that required understanding Accident Sequence Progression and the components/systems relied on for various accident scenarios.

  • Experience with the Notice of Enforcement Discretion (NOED) process, Significance Determination Process (SDP), License Amendment Requests (LARs), Requests for Additional Information (RAIs), Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI) and Maintenance Rule.

  • Experience in Human Reliability Analysis/Human Error Probabilities (HRA/HEP)

Specific Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.

  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications

  • 1 year of nuclear power plant experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
