Position Summary

As part of the Digital Transformation organization, you will be part of a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, energetic, and high performing team helping to develop cloud native applications and services to enhance the Customer experience. This group is nimble and creative and will shape our technology roadmap. We are looking for engineers who have deep experience building solutions and have the versatility and enthusiasm to take on new problems. Digital transformation is a growing area within Duke Energy and we have multiple positions to fill in this role. While we are a flexible team, some team members may have a focus on front-end development (our solutions span both web and native mobile development) while others may focus more deeply on back-end services. Ultimately we recognize that the world of technology is constantly evolving and our team members do the same.

As a Software Engineer, you will collaborate with technology peers and business partners to design, build and deploy new software using agile/XP/test driven development using a wide range of technologies and solutions. You will will be focused on developing well-designed, efficient code that adheres to the latest industry standards and assist in coding, testing, and debugging new software or making enhancements to existing software for customers. You will be working with designers, developers, and product owners in a small team setting to integrate software components into fully functional software systems spanning multiple business areas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software platforms and frameworks

  • Maintain services, monitor system health, and continually look for improvements

  • Scale systems sustainably using continuous deployment and automation

  • Research and implement best design principals in order to improve reliability and velocity

  • Work in an agile environment and engage in practices such as XP, test driven development

  • Works with technical team to understand problems with software and resolves them

  • Resolves customer complaints with software and responds to suggestions for improvements and enhancements from customers

  • Collaborates with product owners, designers, business analysts and other Architects on the development of secure information technology strategy and solution architectures

Working Conditions

  • Position must sit in Charlotte, NC

  • Up to 5% travel

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduated with a two year IT Technical degree or four year degree, wtih three or more (3+) years experience (for two year degree candidates), one (1+) year of experience for four year degree candidates

  • Five (5) years of prior equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more of the following: Java, Angular, JS, REST services, Cloud, Swift

  • Understanding of Web Service API’s, web-based systems architecture, cloud-based systems architecture and service oriented architecture (SOA)

  • Understanding of Cloud Native principles and techniques such as Microservices/BDD; containers/Docker; Agile; 12 factor apps; test driven development; cloud

  • Experience building new software using agile/XP/test driven development

  • Ability to program well-designed, efficient code that adheres to the latest industry standards

  • Experience with troubleshooting, debugging and upgrading software programs

  • Experience with the integration of software components into fully functional software systems

  • Strong ability to work with designers, developers, and product owners in a small team setting

  • Leadership, communication, presentation, and influencing skills

  • Ability to absorb change and continue with positive results.

  • Self-motivated and at ease in a constantly changing environment

  • Understanding of IT DevOps principles and tools
