Job Summary:

The Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU) Facilities and Controls Engineering group provides engineering services to support operations and annual capital project work in the NGBU service areas in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The Engineering FC group is the primary engineering support for the Gas Pipeline Operations department. We work closely with Gas Plant personnel, Technical Field Operations (TFO), SCADA, and Gas Control groups to ensure that stations are designed to meet their needs. The group is now expanding our services portfolio to include corrosion mitigation engineering support to the Risk Management department.

The group is staffed with engineers who are subject matter experts in gas pipeline facility design, control engineering and compression engineering. We are now seeking to add a corrosion mitigation SME. The team provides engineering services for capital projects that are initiated and managed by either Major Projects or TFO Construction Support. An FC Engineer will typically be a project team member for multiple concurrent projects. Operational support of our internal customers includes engineering consultation, troubleshooting assistance and participation in Apparent Cause Analysis (ACA).

As the primary engineering support for the Gas Plants (6 Compressor Stations, 2 Propane Peak Shaving Plants, 4 LNG Plants), our capital project responsibilities include supervision of the civil, mechanical and electrical/control design work performed by the Design Firm. Gas plant projects may range from equipment modification or replacement to complete plant construction or decommissioning.

For pipeline capital projects, the group’s role is to provide internal engineering subject matter expertise to the project team and to provide direction to contracted Design Firms. The new engineer’s primary responsibility will be to ensure that all pipeline facilities are adequately protected from corrosion using active and/or passive methods. The new engineer will liaison to the System Integrity group of the Risk Management department during the project design phase. The new engineer will also work as an integrated member of the Facilities and Control team to cover other design responsibilities as appropriate per individual capabilities.

For equipment control related matters, Facilities and Control group responsibilities have included ensuring that the hired Design Firm’s station design provides an electrical and control plan that accomplishes the scope of the project and adheres to NGBU standards. Control equipment includes, but is not limited to meters, correctors, pressure and temperature transmitters, heater controllers, control valves, odorizers and remote terminal units/programmable logic controllers (RTU/PLC). Pipeline station types include gas supplier receipt stations, regulator stations, over-pressure protection (OPP) stations, pipeline interconnects, and automated main line valves (MLV).

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Engineering support of both Capital and O&M projects at Compressor Stations, Propane Air Facilities, LNG Plants, and field pipeline station stations.

  • Participate in corporate initiatives and special projects.

  • Other engineering duties as needed by the NGBU.

Note: Dependent upon experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Basic/Required Qualifications: Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree

  • Four or more years engineering experience. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

    Basic/Required Qualifications: Senior Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Corrosion mitigation experience.

  • Pipeline coating experience.

  • NACE certifications.

  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience.

  • Familiarity with P&ID and electrical schematics.

  • Electrical power distribution or controls experience.

  • Computer programming experience.

  • PLC or RTU programming experience. Machine control experience.

  • Natural gas or energy industry engineering experience.

  • Demonstratable knowledge of CFR 49 Part 192 - Federal Safety Standards for the Transportation of Natural Gas by Pipeline, especially subpart I.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam with intention to achieve registration as a Professional Engineer.
