Station & Pipeline Support Team:

The Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU) Pipeline and Station Support Engineering group provides engineering services to support capital project work and pipeline operations through the full 5 state service area (NC, SC, TN, OH, KY). The team is comprised of individuals who provide one of several different subject matter expert functions (controls and electrical design, corrosion engineering, civil/structural engineering). The team provides engineering services for capital projects that are initiated and managed by either Major Projects or Field Operations. Engineers are assigned as needed, based upon their area of expertise, to multi-disciplined project groups for numerous, concurrent projects.

Civil Engineer:

This position supports design and construction of greenfield and brownfield Natural Gas projects related to transmission pipelines and metering and regulating stations. Design is largely done by external engineering firms, this position will focus on specifying requirements and standards and reviewing submitted design deliverables. This is a Subject Matter Expert role, supporting the development of designs over a large range of projects and developing the capabilities of the department as a whole. Detailed / extensive knowledge and understanding of relevant codes and standards is required. Experience working on pipelines / linear projects over 10+ miles is a requirement, HDD knowledge a plus. A PE license is not required, but strongly desired.

Workers at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Workers are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is more complex and varied. 8+ years discipline experience and unique SME skills are required.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Civil site layout and design - grading and earthwork, drainage, groundwater considerations, constructability, ES&C, and permitting.

  • Geotechnical - review and provide oversight of geotechnical engineering & studies, including experience of HDD

  • Structural - foundations, buildings, supports, anchorage, grouting & structural steel.

  • Environmental - Permitting and Compliance, E&SC measures and identification/resolution of deficiencies

    Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering from an accredited program

  • Six (6) or more years of engineering experience with five (5) or more years of work experience in either Transmission pipeline or Civil engineering projects

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience of long linear civil projects (roads, pipelines, sewers, railroad, utility, etc.)

  • Knowledge and use of applicable codes and standards (ASCE, AISC, ACI, IBC, ASTM, ASME)

  • Knowledge of DOT / DEQ / PHMSA Regulations also State departments for environmental quality (NC, SC, UH, KY, TN)

  • Experience of natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline systems. Additional experience in pipeline construction is a plus.

  • Knowledge of Horizontal Directional Drilling

  • Strong technical aptitude and achievement.

  • Knowledge of processes and procedures within the Duke NGBU organization and engineering department.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across organizations.

  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills to express ideas and influence a wide audience. Ability to prepare and effectively present concepts one-on-one and in group settings.

  • Displays strong orientation for safety, customer service, communication and leadership.

    Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid work pattern (expected 2 days a week in office)

  • Occasional travel
