Description:

Duke Energy is currently seeking highly motivated students for summer engineering internships within our nuclear generation organization. Internship will begin in May and last 12 weeks through mid-August. Potential candidates must be currently enrolled in one of the following bachelor’s degree programs at an ABET accredited four-year college or university and must have completed a minimum of one year of studies prior to beginning the internship.

Bachelor’s in Engineering Technology programs do not meet this requirement.

The internships will be located across the fleet at the following locations applicants MUST be willing to work at any of the following Duke Energy locations:

  • Brunswick Nuclear Plant (Southport, NC)

  • Catawba Nuclear Station (York, SC)

  • Duke Energy Headquarters (Charlotte, NC)

  • Harris Nuclear Plant (New Hill, NC)

  • McGuire Nuclear Station (Huntersville, NC)

  • Oconee Nuclear Station (Seneca, SC)

  • Robinson Nuclear Plant (Hartsville, SC)

As an intern, you will be responsible for assisting engineers in providing support to ensure safe, reliable and economic plant operations in the following areas:

Design Engineering

Creating/Developing design changes to plant systems and equipment requiring modification, upgrade, or replacement. Generating Engineering Change packages by selecting and sizing mechanical/electrical/civil equipment, estimating cost and developing design scope. Managing engineering schedule milestones and budgets. Providing mechanical/electrical/ civil support to station work groups (Operations, Chemistry, Radiation Protection, and Maintenance) for engineering changes and/or design basis inquiries. Originating and/or checking calculations to support plant changes or design basis inquiries. Providing input for development of implementation and testing procedures.

Systems Engineering

Providing overall ownership and reliability of assigned systems, programs and equipment. Providing mechanical/electrical/ civil engineering support to station work groups (Operations, Chemistry, Radiation Protection, and Maintenance) through testing, procedure development and configuration management. Performing problem resolution, cause analysis, operability determinations and corrective action implementation. Performing Engineering Support Program activities such as monitoring, trending, developing periodic health reports, long range planning, maintaining Engineering Support Documents, calculation reviews and conducting plant walk downs. Champion short or long-term projects to improve system/component reliability.

System Engineering Project:

An example project from a previous summer was to enhance the thermal performance balance sheet of the secondary side of the plant. This trending is used to determine if adverse conditions exist in any systems throughout the plant. The final output of this project was a thermal performance status and trending tool for all secondary plant components along with an enhanced automated thermal balance sheet utilizing Excel.

Nuclear Fuels Engineering:

The nuclear fuels organization is a corporate engineering department that supports all Duke Energy nuclear sites. The responsibilities for the nuclear fuels area include fuel mechanical and thermal performance, spent fuel management, fuel supply, probabilistic risk assessment, safety analysis, radiological engineering, and core design. Duke Energy employs one of the largest corporate nuclear engineering departments in the country as most work is done in-house, including core design for all PWR plants.

Nuclear Fuels Engineering Project:

An example project from a previous summer was to investigate an abnormality for Oconee’s VIPRE (thermal-hydraulic code) model and determine why results were not as expected. The intern utilized coding skills to determine where the output deviated from expected results and then compared that to similar plants to reach a conclusion

Basic qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing an Bachelors in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institute (ABET Accreditation can be verified here: http://main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx)

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher

  • Must not graduate prior to December 2022

Desired Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Ability to work 12 weeks from May through August of Summer 2022

  • Demonstrated leadership ability (holds self-accountable, shows initiative, maintains composure under stress, able to multi-task, etc.)

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, team leadership, and analytical skills to resolve a variety of technical and process related issues

  • Interest in working in the Nuclear Energy Industry

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to meet requirements for nuclear station “Unescorted Access/Security Clearance”.

  • Work schedule will be Monday-Thursday, 10 hours shift.

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now and in the future)
