Acquires an understanding of appropriate communications with vendors, field construction, operations personnel, and internal stakeholders. Learns to document project activities and decisions for future reference.

Requisition ID:3739BRPosition Type:Regular Recruiting Location(s):Cedar Rapids, IA Schedule Type:Full-Time Posting Details:Alliant Energy Substation Engineering Department is recruiting a Substation Design Engineer (will fill up to a Senior Level) in our Cedar Rapids, Iowa office. This position will coordinate and execute the electrical-mechanical engineering of medium and high voltage air insulated substation bus and switchgear.
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a power systems focus. Additionally a valid driver’s license will be required, as some travel is necessary for projects and assignments.
Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide engineering services during the scope, design, and construction stages of medium and high-voltage air insulated substation bus and switchgear.
Work with, or lead, the team to ensure deliverables meet expected quality, costs, and adherence to schedule.
Develop single line diagrams, general arrangement and section drawings, control schematics and equipment wiring, raceway systems, grounding systems, station service, and bills of materials for the substation design packages.
Perform technical, cost savings, and constructability reviews of electro-mechanical design packages from internal engineering, outsource sub-contractor engineering, and equipment factories.
Perform studies and analyses, including rigid bus analyses, grounding analyses, lightning protection, illumination studies, auxiliary power system studies, and equipment rating analyses.
Generate equipment specifications, monitor vendor technical compliance, and witness factory acceptance testing as applicable.
Evaluate, recommend, and select high voltage equipment for projects and standards.
Utilize knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) to ensure that designs comply with the required safety clearances.
Provide construction, installation, and commissioning support.

Education and/or experience equivalent to a four year degree from a college or university, within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Specific emphasis in electrical engineering - power systems preferred.
An internship or co-op in engineering preferred.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
