About this position:

The Planning Engineer is tasked with finding innovative engineering solutions to solve complex issues of today's electric grid and designing the grid of the future. This position is part of a dynamic planning team that performs transmission planning studies and related activities across Montana and South Dakota. This Engineer should be able to work both independently and be a high contributor to the team.

    About this job:

  • Use sound analytical skills to model, perform transmission studies, propose solutions to problems, and plan the transmission system for Montana and South Dakota

  • Develop base cases and conduct transmission system studies, using power flow and stability simulation software

  • Maintain compliance with all related reliability standards including industry and regulatory

  • Prepare reports and present results to management and/or internal and external customers

  • Make recommendations to management on system improvements to mitigate identified problems

  • Provide engineering support for operation activities

  • Travel to jobsites, off-site meetings, and trainings (up to 5% travel per year) including overnight stays when necessary

  • Participate in regional transmission groups (such as WECC and SPP)

  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record

  • S. Engineering degree required, Electrical Engineering preferred

  • Basic understanding of electric system and transmission system fundamentals

  • Professional Engineer's Licensure or ability to obtain licensure

  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Computer programming skills preferred

  • Knowledge & experience with power system modeling software preferred (such as PSS/E)

  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written required

  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record

  • Company travel and extended hours may be required
