Department Overview

Power Generation operates and maintains PG&E's hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity for our customers. Our nearly 900 coworkers are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective generation to California in an environmentally responsible manner. Our hydro facilities include 62 conventional hydro powerhouses, a pumped-storage facility, 98 reservoirs, 168 dams and more than 200 miles of canals and flumes, among other water conveyances. Natural gas-fired plants in operation are Humboldt Bay Generating Station in Eureka; Colusa Generating Station in Colusa County and Gateway Generating Station in Antioch. Several utility-scale solar generation plants also are operated and maintained, as well as PG&E’s successful entry into battery energy storage, our Elkhorn Battery facility at Moss Landing in Monterey County.

Job Summary:

PG&E’s Power Generation Maintenance leadership is responsible for the maintenance of the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains, include powerhouses, canals, flumes, tunnels, penstocks, reservoirs, and thousands of acres of watershed lands all covered by operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

Bay Area Minimum: $​132,000

Bay Area Maximum: $​226,000

&/OR​

California Minimum: $​125,000

California Maximum: $​215,000

Responsibilities

• Responsible for supervising the repair and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and auxiliary equipment located within hydro electrical powerhouses and related facilities.

• Responsible as a watershed expert to ensure correct application and adherence to Power Generation’s Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedure.

• Provides guidance and technical interface with Operations, Engineering, Construction and Project Management for asset repair and replacement strategies for long-term planning.

• Identifies and develops recommendations for productivity improvements and executing corrective actions plans to decrease operating costs.

• Provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching, performance management and mentoring to IBEW employees in multiple crafts. Assigns work, prioritizes tasks, prepares work schedules and monitors employees.

• Ensures maintenance work, including regulated preventative and corrective, is completed as scheduled and to quality expectations, while monitoring compliance to standards and specifications, and ensures appropriate documentation of these activities.

• Ensures proper use of work management (SAP) and other tools to support effective management of the watershed assets and resources.

• Performs routine observations of work in progress and maintenance activities to ensure safe and proper work practices are followed.

• Develops and executes action plans to address deficiencies in process or employee skill/knowledge and tracks the progress of those plans.

• Work is divided between field and office environment with extensive use of personal computers, telephone conversations, conference calls and in-person meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid CA Class C driver’s license, by Day 1 of hire

  • 5 years of experience in Hydro Operations, Maintenance or Engineering

  • Will need to climb up and down stairs and ladders, traverse over rocky, uneven, and steep terrain, and drive on narrow and rough mountain roads in inclement weather.

Desired

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other related field

  • Knowledge of Power Generation Operation and Maintenance Standards and Guidelines and associated regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to manage operation and maintenance activities within authorized budget and metrics.

  • Knowledge of Powerhouse equipment and auxiliary systems, including knowledge of multiple crafts including electrical/mechanical, civil works, telecommunications, and controls/protection systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret civil, electrical and mechanical arrangement drawings.

  • Skilled in troubleshooting simple and complex systems and equipment.

  • Knowledge of Powerhouse and Water Conveyance protection schemes and equipment.

  • Knowledge of Work Management systems, including planning and scheduling, and documenting work performed.
