National Grid Summer 2025 Intern Program: Engineering & Sustainability (Brooklyn, NY) in Brooklyn, New York

Your summer will start with us on May 27, 2025, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun!

City/State Construction (Staten Island, NY)

Our City/State Construction team is responsible for the engineering, design, and technical oversight during the construction of projects relating to the gas distribution networks in New York City. We are required to understand the process around sewer, water, catch basins and other installations associated with NYC/LI municipalities. As a Gridtern, you will create AutoCad sketches of Gas Replacement Designs,

identify and acquire the necessary permits associated with the projects, assist engineers in managing multiple projects within budget and time constraints, assemble job packages which includes work order creation, permits, and visit active gas construction/city contractor job sites.

Digital Solutions & Network Operations (Brooklyn, NY)

Our NY Digital Solutions group guides the development and deployment of digital products across National Grid’s NY Electric business, steering product prioritization and business case development and ensuring successful delivery. The Network Operations team within the Digital Solutions team focuses on technologies that optimize electric grid operations and enable connection of customer distributed energy resources (DER.) As a Gridtern, you will support our Network Operation products by participating in agile sprints to deliver solutions. This process includes providing detailed current state-process and future-state process documentation while tracking objectives and key results.

Downstate NY Liquefied Natural Gas (Brooklyn, NY)

Our Greenpoint LNG (liquefied natural gas) team’s primary function is to supplement the natural gas supply during peak demand periods when the existing pipeline infrastructure may not be able to meet the required gas flow. As a Gridtern, you will be responsible for documenting procedures, creating reports, and maintaining records related to engineering operations activities. You will also assist in process optimization by working alongside engineering and operations professionals to identify areas of inefficiency, propose process improvements, and assist in implementing changes to enhance operational efficiency.

Environmental Sustainability (Brooklyn, NY)

Our US Environmental Sustainability team is focused on the greenhouse gas (GHG) portion of the Responsible Business Report. We drive sustainability throughout National Grid, from supporting and setting the strategic direction, to influencing the external environment to help change the business. As a Gridtern, you will assemble a GHG metric library to further enhance reporting and emission analytics, conduct peer benchmarking to assess sustainability performance, refine methodologies for quarterly greenhouse gas emission projection calculations, facilitate GHG, contribute reporting Improvements for various metrics, support voluntary disclosure preparation and submission, support US Nature Strategy and commitments, support supply chain sustainability strategy activities and write articles on sustainability-related concepts for internal distribution channels.

Gas Programs - Construct Contractor Oversight NYC (Brooklyn, NY)

The Gas Construction Contractor Oversight NYC department at National Grid is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services to customers. The department oversees the work performed by external contractors who are involved in various aspects of the gas distribution system including construction. As a Gridtern, you will provide support with performance monitoring and reporting, audits and inspections, training and support, incident investigation, operator qualification validation, records and work package.

Gas Planning and Design Engineering NYC (Brooklyn, NY)

The Gas Planning and Design Engineering team plays a crucial role in the design and management of distribution gas pipeline replacement projects. We are involved in every stage of the project's life cycle, from initial design to overseeing live construction projects. Our responsibilities include ordering permits, coordinating with gas customers, and collaborating with field crews. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to own and work on projects by conducting research, analyzing data, and collaborate with teammates by preparing materials for presentations.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, May 27, 2025, and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer

  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2025 Semester

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master's degree

  • Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science, or a related field

  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age

  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)

  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$24.00 -$28.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$33.00 - $34.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
