Project Manager, Principal

Job Description:

Provide support to NGG in development and implementation of major departmental or plant wide projects, including functional requirements, training, use of technology, budget and management of consulting resources. This position is specifically responsible for managing the infield implementation of capital projects.

Essential Job Functions & Tasks:

  • Plan and Manage assigned project installation work activities. Provide direct supervision of implementation and testing teams.

  • Hold employees and contractors accountable for the AEP System Safety Process. Maintain a safe working environment focused on Zero Harm.

  • Ensure team managers, develops, reviews and coordinates the project installation plan, schedule, budget, tools and staff as well as provide supervision of other leading these activities.

  • Responsible for implementation details, including status updates.

  • Develop and actively manage working relationships with project teams, plant and operations staff, internal and external customers, partners, contractors, vendors and suppliers.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and support for maintaining the construction budget. Provide forecast data to ensure effective development of cost estimates and cash flow basis.

  • Represent AEP with industrial customers, vendors and regulators, as required.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, business, project management, or related field of study with 7 years qualified experience or, two-year Associate’s degree in required disciplines with 9 years of qualified experience (see below).

Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a PROJECT MANAGER SR (Grade 8) preferred, OR demonstrated competencies, knowledge and skillset through achieved results in a shorter timeline.

Qualified experience includes work in project management, major construction field experience, project estimating, controls, engineering, and/or comparable experience in a competitive production environment. Experience must include a demonstrated level of successful project management duties, business acumen, and prior responsibility for ALL of the certifying body knowledge areas.

License/Certification: PMP certification required. Valid driver's license required.

For nuclear facilities only: Educational requirement can be fulfilled by qualified experience in the Navy Nuclear Program in addition to the years of experience noted.


  1. Provide effective leadership, team building and meeting management as outlined by the certifying body and the AEP leadership competencies and values. Demonstrate very high level of ability, motivation, and attitude in leading a teams and projects to successful conclusion.

  2. Effective and compelling communication, including effective listening with all stakeholders.

  3. Apply economic analysis techniques. Develop an acumen for the business and profession in project decision making and ensure alignment of project and company financial goals.

  4. Influence the Engineering & Design, Procurement, Contracting, Estimating, and Construction procedures and processes to optimize a project. Ensure project teams utilize the latest department and/or BU guidelines and requirements. Identify opportunities for process improvement across projects and drive implementation.

  5. Apply working knowledge of certifying body Project Management tools and techniques.

  6. Provide strategic thinking, planning, risk assessment and prioritization of project activities. Globally view projects from all angles such as safety, constructability, sequence, changing conditions, contingencies, contractual, predictability, level of priority, sense of direction and productivity to identify/avoid/mitigate project risks. Demonstrate sound decision making practices.

  7. Provide organization of activities, delegate tasks, set team requirements, manage deliverables and accountability. Provide constructive feedback.

  8. Take timely, independent action and offer recommendations to management for resolution of elevated issues.

  9. Proficient and highly effective in contract development and management. Skilled in allocating risk between owner and contractor within terms of the contract. Leverage and build relationships with contractors in developing program level procurement.

  10. Seek input from SMEs by asking the right questions, understanding the nuance, clarifying and validating information. Sensitize experts to influences they have on the project's key parameters of project budget, scope, schedule and risk.

  11. Promote continuous improvement, ask intrusive questions and challenge assumptions.

  12. Perform light physical duties. Duties can involve construction site walkdown on unstable surfaces, climbing ladders, and awareness of hazardous site conditions

  13. Perform work at various AEP locations in varying conditions. Work sites can include home, office, power plants (including nuclear), and construction sites. Work performed at nuclear power sites may involve work in hazardous areas and possible radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the NRC.

  14. Travel typically 25% or less, however greater travel may be required in support of specific assignments.
