Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for two Substation Technicians to join our T&D Construction crews. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What do Substation Technicians do for us?

Idaho Power is looking to hire two qualified Station Technicians at the Apprentice or Journeyman level - one on a Control Crew and another one a Combo Crew. A Combo Crew is generally made up of both Control and Structural Technicians. A description for each discipline is listed below:

Control

The Station Control Technician or Apprentice installs, commissions, and troubleshoots substation and power plant control systems, including system monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Remedial Action Schemes (RAS), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.

Structural

The Station Structural Technician or installs substation and power plant ground grids, foundations, structures, breakers, transformers, buss, high and low-voltage cables, and other apparatus.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • OSHA regulations, chemical safety, electrical safety related work practices

  • Electrical circuits, electronics, algebra, and trigonometry

  • Utility system practices and utility business practices

  • Substation and power plant construction, operations, maintenance, and safety practices

  • Safe operation of hand and power tools used in the electrical trades

  • AC and DC circuit theory, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and other drawings such as station construction prints with electrical, mechanical, and structural details

  • Batteries, protective controls, and other equipment relative to station control

  • Power transformers, load tap changers, and potential and current transformers

  • Power circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect and air break switches, synchronous condensers, series and shunt capacitors, AC & DC controls

  • Electrical test equipment (multi-meter, volt-ohm meter, current sources, breaker simulator, etc.) and testing methods, and troubleshooting techniques

  • Performance Management System, corporate policies, Idaho Power’s safety program

  • PC use and basic software

  • Rigging and fall protection

  • Bucket truck and man lift rescue

  • Structural and mechanical drawings (i.e., elevations, plans, sections, details)

  • Heavy equipment operation (i.e., bucket truck, boom truck, backhoe, line bed, skid steer, and man lift)

  • Proper use of transit, surveying practices, and laying out station foundation baselines and elevations

  • Forming, pouring, and finishing of concrete

  • Steel and aluminum welding, and cutting torch

Skills in:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication

  • Problem identification and problem solving

  • Troubleshooting

  • Operating test equipment

  • Basic use of personal computers using software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and e-mail

  • Organization and time management

Ability to:

  • Read and understand station drawings

  • Properly correct and document changes to station drawings

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Work in a team environment, as well as independently and be self-motivated and flexible

  • Work with a high degree of accountability and meet established project deadlines

  • Apply established guidelines and use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems

  • Expected to work increasingly independently as evaluated by the Journeyman and/or Leader

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Control Apprentice

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED and vocational degree in an electrical or construction discipline

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, work experience, related formal apprenticeship training, or military training in an electrical or construction discipline

OR

  • Currently employed as an IPC Pre-Apprentice Stations Technician

Experience:

  • 2 or more years work experience in an electrical or control wiring field

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

  • Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days

Preferred:

  • Journeyman electrician certification

  • Bureau of Office of Apprenticeship (OA) Certification in an Electrical Technician Apprentice program

  • AAS in electrical or electronic systems or equivalent

  • Confined space training and all restraint training

Control Journeyman

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED and vocational degree in an electrical or construction discipline

OR

  • State recognized Journeyman Electrician License

OR

  • Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience:

  • 5 or more years work experience in an electrical or control wiring field, including at least 3 years of control wiring experience in substations

OR

  • Completion of a Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Substation program

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

  • Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days

Structural Apprentice

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED and vocational degree in a mechanical maintenance, electronics, or construction discipline

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, work experience, related formal apprenticeship training, or military training

OR

  • Currently employed as an IPC Pre-Apprentice Stations Technician

Experience:

  • 2 or more years work experience in an electrical, mechanical, maintenance, operation, or construction field

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

  • Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Must obtain tanker endorsement

  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days

Structural Journeyman

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED and vocational degree in a mechanical maintenance, electronics, or construction discipline

OR

  • Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, work experience, or military training

Experience:

  • 5 or more years work experience in an electrical, mechanical, maintenance, operation, or construction field, including at least 2 years of journey-level experience in substation maintenance or construction

OR

  • Completion of a Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Substation program

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

  • Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one prior to hire

  • Must obtain tanker endorsement

  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position performs manual dexterity tasks and repetitive gripping (up to 80 lbs. force) in utilizing hand tools on a frequent basis to assemble electrical components and control panels. Lifting of up to 110 lbs. and pushing/pulling up to 60 lbs. is required occasionally. Sustained postures are required with crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, twisting, and reaching to access areas of control panels. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. This job may require the performance of additional tasks assigned by company leaders or management. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Immediately enroll in the Stations Technician Apprenticeship Program. Additional safety related training may be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position is a member of the Stations Construction department and may be assigned to work in a Panel Shop, on a Substation Control Wiring crew, on a Power Plant Control wiring crew, a Mobile Apparatus crew, or on a combo crew that does both Control wiring and Structural work in substations. The crew this position is assigned to may change at any time depending on business need. This position requires extensive travel across Idaho Power’s service area. The work schedule for this position may change week to week. Typical work schedule includes four 10-hour days, and eight 10-hour days working back-to-back weeks. Each workday may be an out-of-town, overnight stay. This position requires the ability to work overtime and weekends when business need requires. Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations. Complete required Company and safety training.
