Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an Energy Trader - Term to join our Power Supply team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to safely provide our customers with the reliable, affordable, clean energy they depend on. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.

What does an Energy Trader - Term do for us?

This individual performs all term hedge activities related to the Company’s system outstanding positions and executes all structured transactions in merchant activities. The role develops purchases/sales analysis, identifies new opportunities with potential counterparties, and formulates proposal strategies that result in the execution of definitive near term, mid-term, and long-term purchases/sales agreements. This work includes structuring deals in gas, power, and renewable energy certificates (RECs), the ability to directly negotiate with counterparties on terms and conditions and engage in origination activities in Company energy and environmental related businesses. This position will be actively involved in the Company’s new market design and participation, as well as follow all regulatory updates on RECs. This job also helps to perform renewable energy scheduling with counterparties.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Energy portfolio risk management

  • Option valuation as related to financial power markets, natural gas markets and transmission systems

  • Utilities and their business environment

  • Integrated resource planning

  • Generation resources and their characteristics

  • Economic analysis, risk analysis, forecasting and estimating techniques, and analytical models and tools.

Preferred:

  • Idaho Power’s Risk Management policy

  • Energy portfolio analysis

  • Mathematics, statistics, and stochastic/probabilistic theory particularly the mathematical framework underlying the valuation and risk management of futures, options, and other derivatives in energy and financial markets

  • Risk management and risk management tools including financial products and energy derivatives

Skills in:

  • Managing and coordinating multiple projects

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others

  • Effective oral and written communications with a wide variety of people

  • Documenting transactions and establishing job priorities

  • Development and improvement of job processes as needed in a rapidly evolving environment

Ability to:

  • Establish effective business relationships with other work groups, both internal and external to Idaho Power

  • Remain flexible and work in a team environment and adapt easily to change

  • Perform concentrated detailed work with a high degree of accuracy while under pressure resulting from deadlines, crisis situations, and extensive short-term workload

  • Be detail oriented and able to gather, organize and analyze with a high degree of accuracy

  • Work without direct supervision and take initiative to resolve problems within Power Supply Merchant group

  • Understand, evaluate, and complete complex multivariable inter- and intra-regional power transactions

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Engineering, Marketing or a related field

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in Business, Finance or Accounting

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in power/natural gas, physical and financial, and marketing/trading

  • An advanced degree may substitute for 1 year of experience, and a NERC certification may substitute for 2 years of experience

Preferred:

  • 7 years of experience in power/natural gas, physical and financial, marketing/trading in WECC

  • Experience in derivative modeling, pricing, design, development, and implementation of portfolio modeling tools

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position.
