Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an Energy Trader or Senior to join our Real Time/Day Ahead team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.
What does an Energy Trader do for us?
The Energy Trader sells energy and energy products in wholesale markets on an hourly/daily basis with supervision. The role involves outbound marketing, commercial negotiation, deliverability assessment, structuring and negotiation, credit and risk evaluation, transmission purchasing/reserving, transaction/accounting recording, delivery scheduling and generation dispatch coordination, and complying with industry procedures and regulatory requirements. The position requires work in the Real Time (aka Hour Ahead) and Day Ahead markets on a variable rotating shift schedule that covers a 24/7/365 trading desk.
This position requires the incumbent to leverage understanding of the electric power sector, including generation, transmission, utilities, markets, and regulations; analyze energy market data and trends; exhibit strong judgement; and demonstrate effective communication to successfully execute transactions for the company. The Energy Trader must also collaborate with others to achieve individual and organizational goals; identify and solve problems; and provide support and direction to drive team’s continuous improvement.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
Trading floor operations
Electric and natural gas grid’s supply and demand components and cost calculations/dispatch pricing
Interconnected transmission operations and delivery points
Emergency action procedures
Risk management principles and policies
Energy accounting and energy trading applications
Contracts and credit
WSPP, ISDA, NAESB agreements, OATT, and WECC requirements
EIM bidding and strategy as it pertains to real-time
WECC trading and scheduling practices/calendar
Idaho Power organization, business objectives, and marketing capabilities
Electric utility operations
Basic accounting and economics
Skills in:
Energy market conditions and trends analysis
Adherence to set responsive times, deadlines, and time-sensitive tasks
Functioning with an entrepreneurial and competitive perspective to assist Idaho Power in actively trading in commodities and executing power transactions
Detailed proficiencies of wholesale energy marketing and trading
Negotiating transactions
Economic analysis
Resource optimization
Microsoft (MS) Office software applications

Documenting transactions and establishing effective job priorities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Energy Trader:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, business, or engineering
OR
- An equivalent combination of training and/or experience
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in a business discipline
OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Experience:
- 4 years of experience in natural gas or power trading/scheduling environment
OR
4 years of experience in natural gas or power system operations
An advanced degree may substitute for 1 year of experience, and a NERC certification may substitute for 2 years of experience
Preferred:
- 4 years of experience in power or natural gas trading/scheduling with exposure to real-time, day ahead, and term trading and NERC certification
Senior Energy Trader:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, business, or engineering
OR
- An equivalent combination of training and/or experience
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in a business discipline
OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Experience:
6 years of experience in natural gas or power trading environment or system operations
An advanced degree may substitute for 1 year of experience, and a NERC certification may substitute for 2 years of experience
Preferred:
- 6 years of experience in power or natural gas trading with exposure to real-time, day ahead and term trading and NERC certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The Energy Trader is generally responsible for the Real Time desk 60% of their schedule, during which time they are required to work a variable 12-hour shift averaging 40 hours per week. The remaining 40% of their schedule is spent on the Day Ahead desk, during which time they are generally required to work 5, 8-hour days averaging 50 hours per week, with a start time of approximately 5:00 a.m. MST. Infrequent travel with overnight stays may be required. Must also maintain regular and punctual attendance and perform other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Day Ahead Energy Trader may be required to work an occasional 12-hour shift. Occasional travel with overnight stays may also be required. The Real Time Energy Trader will be required to work 12-hour shifts.
