Support Engineer - Alabama Control Center


The Support Engineer will function within a team and will be responsible for supporting all day-to-day activities of the Transmission Control Center for Alabama Power Company. Tasks will involve Alabama Power’s Energy Management System, Operations database and mapping tools, Compliance, Fault Analysis and Customer data requests. This individual will also provide technical support for Power System Coordinators and information solutions to the Transmission Control Center as well as for both internal and external customers.


  • EMS Support: Creates new and modifying existing database points per field changes (analog, status/control, accumulator, calculated analog, manual status, etc.) in the Siemens EMS system. Create communications connections, and SCADA stations within the Spectrum System for new RTUs and ICCP connections. Create new and edit existing displays as needed - single line, menus, etc. in the Siemens EMS system; Create and execute scripts for automatic display generation and data manipulation. Identify process improvements and provide solutions Perform SCADA Operational tests with field personnel.

  • Provide Project management for new projects such as: EMS initiatives; Compliance; Operator Awareness projects developed from EMS Historian (eDNA); EMS Alarm Management efficiencies; and Database for Limiting Elements.

  • Analyze and provide solutions to real-time operational issues using Operational tools. Provide the Transmission Control Center, Transmission Maintenance Centers and the Power Coordination Center with problem resolution; participating on Operations committees, and perform annual reviews of operational data.

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Required

  • Electrical, Computer or Software related disciplines preferred

Knowledge and Experience

  • 2 years of experience in Power Delivery

  • Knowledge of EMS/SCADA systems and ancillary programs

  • Basic knowledge of computer programming: SQL, scripting, Unix, Java

  • Working knowledge of power system operations and power flow


  • Excellent communication, organization and leadership skills

  • Ability to solve problems and to make sound decisions

  • Meet tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
