Structural Engineer - Civil Design

WORK LOCATION

  • This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.

  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.

  • Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home) with the expectation that you can successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

  • Some relocation assistance may be available if the successful candidates does not already live within a reasonable commute distance.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing structural engineering design services for Southern Company Generation on capital and retrofit projects. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform structural design on small to large projects for the Southern Company fleet.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce and check structural design calculations and drawings

  • Multi-task and prioritize multiple project assignments to meet tight project commitment dates

  • Effectively communicate with Supervisor, project team and Plant contacts

  • Develop scope and man-hour estimate for assigned projects

  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines

  • Provide schedule and staffing input for projects

  • Prepare cost estimates and material takeoffs

  • Provide engineering support to Plants and to Construction throughout all phases of the project

  • Some non-extended travel to the Birmingham office, construction sites and client locations is required

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license in state of Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia or able to obtain one would be desired

Work Experience

  • At least 6 years of experience in structural design and/or plant experience related to power generation or heavy industrial/petrochemical facilities is required

  • Significant project design and execution experience

  • Significant experience in production of contract documents (drawings & specifications) for industrial projects

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of structural steel and concrete design principles and industry methodologies

  • High level of initiative and the ability to effectively plan, organize and execute multiple projects

  • Working knowledge of Plant facilities and projects for heavy industrial structures and components

  • Proficiency with structural codes and standards such as ACI 318, AISC 9 th , 13 th and/or 14 th Edition, ASCE 7 and IBC

  • Experience using design software and computer programs such as STAAD PRO, Ansys, Navisworks, AutoCAD, SP Mats, etc.

  • Good communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong relationships is a must

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct others in the production of design documents (specifications, calculations, and drawings).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires travel primarily to sites within the Southern Company Generation Fleet and the Birmingham office – up to 25% per year.
