Southern Company Staff Accountant in Birmingham, Alabama

Southern Company Services (SCS) currently has a position available in our Accounting department located at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. This role is a vital part of a team that manages accounting tasks associated with billing for research and development activities, as well as meeting various reporting requirements for governmental funding. Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field of study required

  • An advanced degree or certification is preferred.

  • Minimum 1 year of recent accounting experience; including experience in financial reporting.

  • Prior experience in overseeing the financial aspects of US Department of Energy awards, including reporting and compliance, is highly valued.

  • Knowledge of the following:

    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

    • Securities and Exchange Commission rules and regulations

    • Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance requirements

    • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accounting rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills, evidenced by the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all organizational levels, across various departments, and spanning multiple geographic locations of the company.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure government projects are set up accurately and in a way to support Federal Acquisition Regulation requirements.

  • Collaborate with contacts to ensure accurate and timely billing of all government contracts.

  • Guarantee the prompt and accurate generation of journal entries, backed by relevant documentation, to uphold the timeliness of month-end closures and the integrity of the financial statements.

  • Finalize account reconciliations by the predetermined deadlines, ensuring that all reconciliations are accompanied by sufficient documentary evidence.

  • Prepare for various audits and Incurred Cost Submission studies by providing the necessary information in a timely manner, thus maintaining a positive and productive relationship with auditing personnel.

  • Foster innovation and enhance efficiency within repetitive processes, aiming to optimize operations in a dynamic work environment.

  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to management to support decision-making processes.

  • Stay current with changes in government regulations and accounting standards to ensure ongoing compliance and best practices.
