Spire is seeking a Senior Accountant to work in Birmingham, Alabama office. This position will be focused on Capital and O&M projects and their entire lifecycle. The position will be responsible for generating project adjustments, journal entries and fixed asset related transactions, for accurate and timely financial data and financial statements. This position will also include approval and analysis of capital project costs including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. This role also collaborates often with other functional areas, including but not limited to Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Operations Controller, Pipeline Management, Organic Growth, Customer Experience, and Regulatory.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare and post project adjustments and journal entries, perform account analyses and reconciliations
Approve capital projects and monitor their lifecycle through closing into Fixed Assets, ensuring timely closing of projects through communication with internal departments
Perform monthly closing responsibilities, including project & fixed asset processing of AFUDC and depreciation, and all other fixed asset transactions
Perform unitization of capital additions, including doing any analysis review and allocation of all construction work order expenditures
Retire Company property that is no longer in service
Train and assist staff with accounting procedures and problem solving
Generate accruals, estimates, etc recorded during the monthly close
Work on special projects and requests
Perform other quarterly/annual projects, including but not limited to providing information for the annual budgeting process; assisting the Company’s external auditors with quarterly/annual reports, and providing information for Regulatory reporting
Calculate the annual depreciation, amortization, and AFUDC interest capitalized budgets and handle all fixed asset reporting, analyses, and inquiries from the PSC
All other duties as assigned
Essential Characteristics and Competencies
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet individual goals and deadlines

Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people
Outstanding customer service skills and team player abilities
Regular attendance is considered an essential job function
Required Education (certifications, licenses)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar degree
Required knowledge, skill and abilities
Two years of experience in journal entry preparation and with the monthly closing process
Minimum three years of relevant experience, preferred
Two years of experience with the Company’s accounting policies and procedures and familiarity with the Company’s operations, preferred
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as they relate to property, plant, equipment, and depreciation, preferred
Knowledge of FERC’s gas plant instructions, capital and operating accounting system, preferred
Knowledge of the Company’s Operations Division and the responsibilities of the individual departments within Operations, preferred
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Physical demands, environment and schedule
Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a shared office environment.
Working Hours: Typically, 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required to meet strict deadlines
Travel: Occasional travel may be required.
