Counsel / Sr. Counsel


The Counsel will effectively and efficiently provide legal counsel and support to the subsidiaries of the Southern Company. This position will report to an Associate General Counsel in the Legal Department.

Position will be filled as Counsel or Senior Counsel, depending on qualifications.


  • JD from an ABA accredited law school; excellent academic credentials

  • Current State License to practice law in one or more states in the U.S.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to work effectively with all levels of internal client organization

  • Approximately 5 – 7 years of experience practicing law in a large, nationally recognized law firm representing Fortune 100 clients or a substantial corporate law department

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Required experience in drafting and negotiating contracts with large corporate client or utility; work with government agencies or other government contracting experience strongly preferred

  • Possess skills required to research and address legal matters, including drafting and negotiating agreements and technology contracts

  • Possess the ability to determine priorities and meet the deadlines required with minimal supervision


  • Provide legal counsel, draft agreements, and negotiate commercial and legal terms and conditions for a broad range of transactions for business units system wide including information technology, intellectual property rights, and project agreements with government agencies, as well as developing and maintaining standard contract provisions and templates

  • Perform advanced legal and factual research

  • Manage documentation associated with commercial and legal disputes

  • Assist the Associate General Counsel and other attorneys in the General Counsel’s Office by performing other assignments, as directed
