WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
This position is flexible to be based out of either Birmingham, AL or Atlanta, GA, however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to travel to the corporate buildings and project sites as needed to support business needs.
Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment). Must have the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to high-speed internet service.
Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
This position will require some travel (up to 25%, mix of both day-trip and overnight) – May require some travel to field sites on an as-needed basis.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position will resides in our Technical Services organization and serves as technical and project support for renewables projects, focused on energy storage. Technical Services is responsible for assisting Southern Company’s generating companies with the development, implementation, and acquisition of renewable generation and energy storage resources including distributed energy resources (DERS) and microgrids. These resources can be sourced through self-build, existing facility conversion, and/or acquisition of assets. This position will assist the project team(s) with the development and implementation of energy storage projects.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve on cross-functional project teams through the process of planning and developing new energy storage projects
Develop reports and assist in reviewing and editing technical specifications and commercial documents.
Build relationships with key contractors and vendors.
Provide technical, project and construction management support from conception to commercial operation
Build relationships with key internal Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
Participate in the development of engineering, construction, and major equipment contracts
Perform general duties related to monthly reporting, schedule reviews, and cost tracking
Prepare presentations and data requests for meetings and other requirements
Understand energy storage technology, market conditions, and industry codes.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or another related field
- Electrical Engineering degree preferred, but not required
Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired: battery/energy storage technologies, electrical design, I&C design, power plant controls, renewable project development, and project management
Knowledge of inverter-based generation including wind, solar, storage as well as distributed energy resources and microgrids is a plus
Experience with data analytics, performance metrics, or PowerBi/Tableau is a plus
Skills & Abilities:
The ability to build strong working relationships with internal departments and customers
Proven analytical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
Active learner and self-starter
Must be able to think creatively and independently in the development of new solutions
Demonstrated ability to build consensus and effectively communicate complex topics
Project management abilities with proficiency in prioritizing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Some overnight travel and short-term field assignments during commissioning and testing should be expected
