In this job, you’ll support the Facility Environmental Programs Division (FEP) which is the focal point for implementing Southern California Edison’s environmental compliance obligations at facility and field locations. The FEP Environmental Science Advisor (ESA) executes the company’s compliance responsibilities for many environmental disciplines such as: air quality, asbestos, hazardous waste, hazardous materials, facility inspection, and water quality. In addition, the ESA will administer the environmental contractor work authorization process and supervise contractor crews in the performance of small-to-medium size waste cleanups, remediation work and waste disposal/transportation activities.

In this ESA position, you will routinely make decisions regarding the implementation of regulatory requirements as delineated in regulatory agency issued permits and SCE’s environmental standards and manuals. Generally, you will be responsible to assure compliance with regulatory requirements at SCE facilities, appropriately raising non-compliance issues through the management structure. You will serve as a primary point of contact on environmental issues for operating personnel and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Normally, 70% of work time supports environmental compliance activities and the balance is spent administering work authorization and supervising environmental contractors performing various work activities. Periodically, work authorization and supervision of contractor crews requires greater than 90% of work time for a period of consecutive days.

  • Occasional after-hours work is required and overtime pay (1.5x) is available for qualifying activities.

  • Oversee and conduct hazardous waste and material operations which includes disposal, container labeling, transportation scheduling, manifest management, and the monitoring of chemical inventories.

  • Conduct environmental inspections/self-assessments and maintain compliance documents in a file management system.

  • Conduct air quality compliance activities. Including: verify permit conditions, record equipment meter readings and verify the registration and permitting of equipment.

  • Support water quality compliance activities including inspections and wastewater discharge activities.

  • Interact with regulatory agencies.

  • Lead regulatory agency inspections and implement corrective actions to address notices to comply and notices of violation.

  • Support employee environmental compliance training and facilitate training sessions.

  • Ability and willingness to work in fast-paced work situations that occur periodically and on an emergent basis.

Qualifications

The essentials

  • Seven or more years of experience with the development, implementation or oversight of environmental programs.

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical discipline.

  • Experience with supervising field work.

  • Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) or Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST).

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with other SCE departments.

  • A company vehicle is available for your use.

  • Alternative work schedule is available: 5/40, 9/80 or 4/10.

  • Work Mode: This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
