Become a Catalina Utilityman at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be in the Generation Organizational Unit based on Catalina Island. The Generation Organizational Unit is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of Southern California Edison's Generation assets which includes hydro, solar, potable water, gas, combined cycle, and fuel cells.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • As instructed and directed, performs a variety of routine and miscellaneous unskilled construction or maintenance laboring tasks, including, but not limited to:

  • Digs holes and trenches with pick, shovel, bar, and jackhammer; clears brush and hoes weeds; mixes and places concrete; reads electric, gas, and water meters; replaces water and gas meters or regulators; uncrates and stores material and supplies; loads and unloads truck; hauls trash and material; runs errands; cleans building and grounds and performs minor rough carpentry, painting and plumbing or unskilled tasks.

  • Operates equipment such as light truck, automobile, tractor, forklift, air compressor, jackhammer, winch, hoist, chain, saw, weed burner, or power hand saw and drill.

  • Performs similar and incidental duties as required in all phases of the Catalina operations electric, gas, water or generating plant.

Qualifications

The essentials

  • Knowledge of territory and locations of streets within the district, and traffic laws and proper operation of a motor vehicle.

  • Valid California Driver License, with clean abstract.

  • Experience performing heavy physical work in a shop or field environment.

  • Ability to work overtime on short notice.

  • Ability to work a set work schedule of 6:00AM – 4:30PM (4/10 work schedule, 1 day off per week plus weekends off).

  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job are at a level comparable with those normally acquired through courses taken in obtaining a high school education.

  • Please Note: Daily commuting from the mainland to Catalina Island is not a viable option. All successful candidates must reside on Catalina.

The preferred

  • Ability to learn tools, material, and methods for construction and maintenance labor tasks; perform heavy manual labor; accurately determine registration of meters; learn and follow pertinent safety precautions.

  • This position’s work mode is on-site. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.

Testing

  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position.
