Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus six years of directly related Utility electrical experience, two years of which were as a journeyman substation electrician.
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License or ability to acquire license and/or endorsements within 90 days of employment.
Ability to produce and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Notes to Applicants
The Substation Crew Leader will be responsible for overseeing the work of a 6-person crew and will report directly to the Substation Maintenance Supervisor.
Driving Requirement:
This position requires a Texas Class A Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite (https://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Employment/new_hire_driver_safety_standards.pdf) . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
Experience acting in a Lead role for Substation Maintenance projects
Ability to read and interpret substation prints and one-line diagrams
Experience overseeing Doble Test crews and the ability to interpret Doble test results
Experience with load tap changer ( LTC ) maintenance and repairs, including the ability to diagnose problems
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Plans, organizes, and schedules crews to complete assigned work orders, including assigning tasks, checking materials ready, performing quality inspections, preparing switching requests, and preparation of as built markups. Monitors task completion, compliance and safety issues.
Trains personnel in applying sound electrical maintenance and construction techniques in High, Medium and Low voltage electrical systems.
Performs quality inspections of work performed, vehicle inventory, work procedures, one-line books and job sites.
Operates tools and equipment to perform repairs, installations, and maintenance of substation electrical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switchgears, structures, and switches.
Restores electrical systems during emergencies.
Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documents. Assists personnel with completing required Drivers Vehicle Condition reports.
Assists in completing fault investigations and participates in root cause analysis of fault.
Conducts detailed tailboard meetings with crew as needed to ensure awareness of conditions, hazards, and specifics of work to be performed.

Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems.
Knowledge of installation, operation, and maintenance of substation equipment
Knowledge of laws, theories, rules and standards pertaining to electrical construction and maintenance.
Knowledge of City of Austin policy and procedures.
Knowledge of electronic schematics and blueprints sufficient to interpret and modify/design as needed.
Knowledge of local environment requirements for construction and maintenance activities
Skill in estimating time, material and labor for job assigned
Skill in oral and written communications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and written specifications
Ability to demonstrate and use electrical related test equipment, hand tools, power tools, and hydraulic benders.
Ability to work in field conditions, temperature extremes, and in all types of weather conditions.
Ability to train others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
