    This position will support in Operating the 24/7 physical access control and surveillance system and provide mobile patrols to support secured operations of the utility.

    This position must communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external customers to provide a safe and secure environment for all employees and city assets. Travel is required to and from different Austin Energy properties to respond to emergencies and conduct security patrol of unmanned sites which most are energized areas with uneven terrain.

    This position is physically demanding and requires daily, year-round outdoor activities to include driving for an entire 8 hour shift during extreme heat and/or inclement weather. Extensive and frequent walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, and opening gates is required to perform essential job functions.

    This position is categorized as Essential Personnel, who are required to work during emergencies and bad weather to support operations. Weekend and holiday work may occasionally be required due to weather events and various disasters. Additional work hours may be required to support operations. Hours and days off are subject to change to address business needs.

Work Schedule:

  • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential employees ensure the continuance of key operations for the City of Austin.

  • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends.

  • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.

  • Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.

    TRAVEL :

    If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program ( , you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    Non-exempt employees will be compensated for any additional hours worked when such compensation is required by law.

    Pay Range

$20.00– $22.00 per hour


3rd Shift – Between 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Additional work hours may be required to support the 24-hour utility operations which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather and emergency closures.

Hours may change based on business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in a 24/7 Security Operations Center.

  • Experience with Physical Access Control Systems. (Picture Perfect, Facility Commander, OnGuard or comparable).

  • Experience providing vehicle and foot patrol services for an 8 hour shift in uneven terrain and bad weather.

  • Experience with NERC process and procedures.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Picks up stolen property and handle loss and found items.

  • Operates, repairs, and maintains equipment/reports maintenance problems.

  • Provides delivery/courier services.

  • Conducts safety inspection of facilities, i.e., fire extinguishers, life/safety equipment, etc.

  • Performs situation assessments and investigate work incidents.

  • Identifies, assists, and gives clearance to entering patrons.

  • Provides security and assistance to the public and various law enforcement agencies.

  • Issues parking citations.

  • Administers first aid.

  • Provides training.

  • Identifies suspects and/or research computer database to identify fingerprints.

  • Responds to fire alarms, security alarms, and accidents – contact appropriate emergency personnel.

  • Directs traffic and provide crowd control services.

  • Maintains logs and incident reports.

  • Monitors and operates electronic doors, gates, security systems, etc.

  • Acts as alternate guard when necessary.

  • Manages crises security by soliciting vendors during emergency situations, i.e., plumbers, electricians, elevator repairman, etc.

  • Coordinates building repairs and assist with minor car repairs.

  • Processes and traces evidence.

  • Testifies in court.
