Department Overview

Power Generation operates and maintains PG&E's hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation, and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity for our customers. Our nearly 900 coworkers are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective generation to California in an environmentally responsible manner. Our hydro facilities include 62 conventional hydro powerhouses, a pumped-storage facility, 98 reservoirs, 168 dams and more than 200 miles of canals and flumes, among other water conveyances. Natural gas-fired plants in operation are Humboldt Bay Generating Station in Eureka; Colusa Generating Station in Colusa County and Gateway Generating Station in Antioch. Several utility-scale solar generation plants also are operated and maintained, as well as PG&E’s successful entry into battery energy storage, our Elkhorn Battery facility at Moss Landing in Monterey County.

Position Summary

Oversees and supervises the operation in support of irrigation deliveries and ensures compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Department of Safety of Dams (DSOD) guidelines for the inspection of canals, flumes, spill channels, penstocks, and public safety devices. Provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching, and mentoring to IBEW employees. Provides communication and assistance to Power Generation ESC employees and other Power Generation support departments such as Dam Safety, License and Compliance, Public Safety Specialist, Land, Transportation, Corporate Real Estate and Environmental Services.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

Minimum Base Salary (California) $ 125,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (California) $ 215,000.00

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as the watershed expert to review and check safe work clearances using Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures, including clearance walkdowns, proper documentation, print and P&ID verifications, and adherence to LOTO procedures related to the water conveyance system.

  • Provides expertise, support, and conducts safety training for watershed personnel.

  • Manages and takes action to ensure public safety within operational locations.

  • Works with Land Department - identification and resolution associated with third party claims and developer projects.

  • Manages and responds to potential releases of hazardous materials related to the water conveyance system.

  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental requirements.

  • Represents Hydro O&M during regulatory conveyance inspections, and responsible for coordinating follow-up actions related to inspections, and information/data requests.

  • Responsible for tracking regulatory requirements and documenting inspection compliance using SAP Work Management, Dam Watch and Inspect applications.

  • Provides technical interface with Operations, Engineering, Construction and Project Management for asset repair and replacement strategies that may potentially impact water operations.

  • Manages in-stream release requirements and develops reservoir draw down and fill plans.

  • Uses a full knowledge of reservoir principles, reservoir protection, reservoir management, water rights and regulations as needed to maintain proper reservoir and water conveyance operations.

  • Ensures inspection findings are communicated to Operations and Maintenance and assist with prioritization of work to ensure the safe operation of the conveyance system.

  • Develops and/or executes action plans to address deficiencies in the inspection process or employee skill/knowledge and track the progress of those plans.

  • Identifies and pursues productivity improvements and implements work practices to reduce operating costs while meeting corporate and regulatory compliance.

  • Investigates external third-party public water safety issues/incidents and provides feedback to customers.

  • Investigates incidents and develops corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. Investigates and conducts root cause analysis of recordable, motor vehicle and near miss incidents, warnings, and develops corrective actions to resolve deficiencies.

  • Provide key input to the strategic investment process.

  • Performs routine observations of work in progress and inspection activities to ensure safe and proper work practices are adhered to.

  • Leads, promotes, fosters, and advances the establishment of a safety and non-accident culture.

  • Work is divided between field and office environment.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School or General Educational Development-GED Diploma

  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License or equivalent on day 1 of hire.

  • 5 years of experience in Hydro Operations, Maintenance, or Engineering

  • Will need to climb up and down stairs and ladders, traverse over rocky, uneven, and steep terrain, and drive on narrow and rough mountain roads in inclement weather.

Desired:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other related field

  • Leadership experience

  • Participant in FERC Part 12D Safety Inspection

  • Participant in FERC Part 12 D Failure Mode Analysis Work Shop

  • PE-Professional Engineer license

  • PE-Professional Engineer Civil license
