Position Summary

A career in Emergency Preparedness at SJI will provide you the opportunity to be part of a growing department at the Company. You will have the opportunity to assist in developing and implementing emergency response, management and/or preparedness plans that minimize disruption related to events impacting our utility operations.

Roles within Emergency Preparedness are responsible for identifying and planning for potential risks based on the organization's industry and/or physical location. In addition, this role will coordinate plans with federal, state, or local emergency management agencies, or first responders. You will also plan and execute drills or responses to simulated emergency situations and may be responsible for organizational certification or compliance with regulatory guidelines, if applicable.

Hybrid schedule - M-F 8:00am – 4:30pm with some standby/on call hours as needed. Work schedules are flexible and may be modified as needed.

Essential Functions -

  • Performing assigned tasks (under close supervision) that support day-to-day activities within the specific job family.

  • Following appropriate methods and techniques in performing tasks

  • Planning and organizing details with guidance

  • Using established data, reports and previous results to identify inappropriate variances and concerns. Reporting inconsistent results to supervisor and management

  • Participating in group meetings. Possibly presenting data or preparing for others to present

  • This role will learn to use professional concepts and apply company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues. You will work on problems of limited scope and follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Additionally, you will build stable working relationships internally.

  • It is expected that your role applies basic skills to complete assigned work within own group/project team. You will receive detailed instructions on all work. Your role typically reports to Supervisors / Managers.


Required Background –

  • Bachelor’s degree with 0 years of relevant experience

  • Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Preferred skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in disaster planning, emergency preparedness, or safety.

  • Experience as a volunteer firefighter

Required Skills:

  • Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple groups in order to resolve issues.

  • Must be an effective and independent problem solver, with the ability to handle multiple assignments and to prioritize tasks.

  • Proficiency with programs and applications, e.g. MS Office. Ability to work with other PC/Web based applications
