Position Title: Transmission Planning Engineer (III or Senior)

Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)

  • Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

    Summary:

    The transmission planning department of MEAG Power is looking for a transmission planning engineer. The candidate will be joining a team that leads a diversified and exciting portfolio of transmission planning work. This position is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who has experience working in the power industry (or other engineering fields) or has a strong desire to learn and ability to develop a long-term career path in the area of Transmission Planning and Services. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, results-oriented and be able to work under the supervision of the Manager of Transmission Planning & Services to perform Transmission System and Transmission area studies, propose system improvement projects, balance multiple tasks and prioritize work, carry out various job functions and duties to serve MEAG’s Participants.

    Our main focus includes large load interconnection studies for customers from various sectors including technology (e.g data centers), EV charging, manufacturing, agriculture, business parks, warehouses and many more. We collaborate closely with both MEAG Power’s participants and their customers as well as internal teams to develop interconnection solutions and capacity upgrades, and consolidated engineering and implementation plans. We are excited to explore creative solutions and advance technologies, to best serve our participant cities and their customers in a reliable, economic and timely manner.

Moreover, the team develops long-term transmission capacity plans and strategies in conjunction and collaboration with other ITS participants to meet customer needs in the high growth areas.

Together in the TP group we will be in the frontline designing the future of our transmission grid to support all the electricity load growth in the state of Georgia.

Transmission Planning Engineer III (Advanced Level) and Senior Transmission Planning Engineer

This position is for experienced engineers who take on more complex tasks and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications:

  1. Education:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on power systems.

  • 4-6 years of experience in transmission planning, grid studies, power system operations or any other power system related fields. (III Level)

  • 6-8 years of experience in transmission planning, operations, or related fields (Senior Level)

  1. Skills & Knowledge:
  • Advanced knowledge of transmission system analysis, including dynamic stability studies, short-circuit analysis, and transient stability.

  • Proficiency in grid simulation and modeling software (PSS®E, TARA, PSCAD,etc).

  • Ability to lead transmission planning studies, including NERC reliability standard compliance and interconnection studies.

  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.

  • Working knowledge of programming languages (Python, C#, and Visual Basic.net) and data visualization tools is a big plus.

    1. Responsibilities:
  • Lead complex transmission planning studies (e.g., system reliability, grid expansion, interconnection).

  • Coordinate the development of long-term transmission plans with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.

  • Interface with regulatory bodies, utilities, and other stakeholders on planning processes.

  • Evaluate existing transmission facilities that serve MEAG’s participants. Initiate and develop improvement projects to accommodate load growth or improved reliability for the short term and long term.

  • Coordinate design, engineering, and construction for the new or improvement projects identified under system or area planning.

  • Participate and perform necessary joint planning studies with other ITS (Integrated Transmission Systems – four co-owners of the Georgia transmission grid) members and neighboring electric utilities.

  • Assist Principal and Senior Planning Engineers to perform various studies upon request.

  • Assume responsibility for area planning associated with MEAG Participants assigned by Manager of the group. This should include meeting with Participants to discuss needs and concerns associated with existing Transmission system. Review loads on substations and operational history of transmission lines to determine timing of required projects to provide reliable service and adequate capacity for the Participant to serve its loads. Provide input to the ITS Construction Budget and Forecast to optimize timing for these required projects.

  • Meet with Participants to present and discuss APTR (Annual Participant Transmission Report) that provides an overview of the transmission and substation facilities that serve the Participant.

  • Provide information to the Participant for projects that will either impact them, or be constructed near their transmission system.

    1. Certifications:
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) license is a plus.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

    Each level builds on the experience, technical knowledge, and leadership skills gained in the previous levels. Each level is required to actively participate in assigned working groups as required to negotiate solutions that will protect MEAG’s and the Participants’ interests from a reliability and cost standpoint.
