*PLEASE NOTE* This posting serves to fill multiple Designer/Engineer positions within our Protection & Control Applications, Substation Control and Physical Design groups. We are open to considering all levels of experience, provided you meet the basic qualifications as outlined below.

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • These positions will be based out of Atlanta, GA however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

  • Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).

  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

JOB SUMMARY

These positions are responsible for the design of Southern Company’s Transmission and Distribution Substations. The Designer/Engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects with emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. The Protection Applications Engineer will provide protective relay settings, system modeling, and design specifications. These multiple positions will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Designer)

  • Associate Degree with minimum 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer)

  • No Degree with minimum 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer)

Experience (ALL):

  • Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.

  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred.

  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.

Experience (specific to each role):

For Physical Design/Engineer :

  • Strong understanding of substation equipment is preferred.

  • Ability to create Substation Physical Design drawings from a single line diagram is preferred.

  • Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and OSHA safe operating practices is preferred.

  • Experience using 3D modeling software (SDS Inventor) is a plus.

  • AutoCAD training, experience, or certification is preferred.

For Control Design/Engineer :

  • Experience using AutoDesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferred.

  • Ability to be an effective mentor to others and teach job-related skills.

  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.

  • Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plus.

  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.

  • Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line and wiring diagram is preferred.

For Protection Applications Engineer:

  • Experience providing Quality Assurance reviews on design packages is a plus.

  • Experience testing and commissioning protective relay & control schemes is a plus.

  • Experience with impedance modeling tools is preferred.

  • Experience developing protective relay settings is preferred.

  • Knowledge of NERC compliance requirements for the Bulk Electric System (BES) is a plus.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.

  • Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based or impedance modeling tools, based on Southern Company design standards.

For Physical Designer/Engineer:

  • Design the physical aspects of substations including but not limited to Foundation Layouts, Grounding Layouts, Conduit Layouts, Switchgear Assembly Layouts, Switch House Layouts, Electrical Bus Design, etc.

  • Specify and order material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material.

  • Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.

For Control Designer/Engineer :

  • Design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects.

  • Specify and order material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material.

  • Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.

For Protection Applications Engineer:

  • Specify protective relay & control schemes in both green and brown field projects.

  • Develop protective relay setting for microprocessor and electromechanical relays.

  • Develop impedance models from equipment manufacturer data and transmission line designs.

  • Analize transmission system operations.
