Summary of Responsibilities

Southern Company Gas is looking for talented individuals interested in joining this country’s vital natural gas industry. Natural Gas is an essential part of America’s Energy mix and a trusted energy source for more than 70 million homes and businesses. This position is an exciting opportunity for persons who enjoy the challenges of supporting the construction of natural gas transmission facilities. 

The purpose of this position is to lead construction support projects handling cross-functional process improvements and technology to enhance service and efficiencies for Southern Company Gas utilities. Incumbent will serve as construction process subject matter expert for multiple initiatives and as a liaison between construction supervision, pipeline contractors, engineering, inspection firms, and testing firms involved in the execution of large natural gas pipeline construction projects and various departments at SCG. The right candidate must be a self-starter, excellent communicator, and able to make sound decisions. 

General Functional Expertise:

  • Serve as a point of contact for construction supervision, project managers, pipeline contractors and inspection firms for access, maintenance, and issue resolution on the different software/systems SCG utilizes to manage construction projects.

  • Candidate must maintain a high standard of customer service. This position interacts with outisde contractors as well as internal customers.

  • Serve as the main source of official communications from the department to internal construction teams and Contractors.

  • Provide leadership to other team members within the department in the execution of team responsibilities and goals.

Large Pipeline Construction - Functional Expertise:

  • Troubleshoot and provide resolution to internal customers and Contractors on construction project documentation, contract compliance, and data in systems such as M2M, SharePoint, and final Company record systems. Requires in-depth knowledge of SCG engineering and construction processes.

  • Provide daily support and training for all project documentation processes, closeout processes, software platforms, and other challenges that arise. Support new technology upgrades and improvements.

  • Lead project closeout processes for construction projects including: archiving hard copy files, collecting closeout documents, ensuring compliance with closeout checklist, storing as-built PDF and CAD drawings, and processing completion reports for submission to PMO, GIS/Data Services and Plant Accounting. Ensure project documents are stored in a manner that supports future audits.

  • Assists Project Managers in tracking project metrics, project financials, invoicing, schedule updates, change management, and project closeout.

  • Serve as the functional and training lead for M2M, SharePoint, and other project documentation platforms.

  • Guide the on boarding of new pipeline Contractors, Chief Inspectors, and field clerks related to documentation requirements. Obtain necessary login requirements for internal systems required for document distribution.

  • Work with Construction Operations Manager and Superintendents to provide data for tracking metrics for document submission from inspectors, Contractors, and field clerks.

  • Perform QA on documentation to check for errors and consistency.

  • Provide leadership and training to supplemental Document Specialist workers.

  • Monitor large pipeline projects closeout documentation deliverables for monthly reporting, analysis, and address any issues immediately with each Contractor or vendor to ensure compliance.

  • Works with Contractors and internal employees to resolve issues with Company related to final construction documentation.

General Business Acumen:

  • Analyzes construction practices, identifies gaps and deficiencies, and recommends solutions.

  • Supports construction systems and processes such as SharePoint documentation submissions, M2M data entry process and issue resolution, inspector tracking, SmartSheet applications, WMS-ARM, Peoplesoft, etc.

  • Candidate exhibits ‘student of the business’ qualities to better serve both our internal and external customers.

Engagement:

  • Develop and lead training for pipeline Contractors on system changes and updates, process updates, and other construction led changes.

  • Organizationally savvy in order to leverage expertise of other internal groups in the resolution of issues as they arise.

Driving Results:

  • Ensures integration of technology solutions with business needs by serving as a subject matter expert on construction processes, contract management and project documentation for Project Managers, Construction Operations and Pipeline Contract vendors.

  • Conducts regular auditing of Pipeline Contractor compliance with existing processes and procedures

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 5-7 years of experience in construction support, field operations, or other distribution operations function and technology

Preferred

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Business or other related field

  • 1-2 years supervisory or project leader experience

Skills:

Required:

  • High levels of interpersonal skills, with ability to leverage internal and external stakeholders to efficiently accomplish tasks and resolve issues

  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint

  • Knowledge of heavy field construction and how the many parties involved interact with each other

  • High degree of initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work across a matrix organization structure with horizontal and vertical teams

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Customer service oriented

Preferred:

  • Natural gas pipeline experience

  • High level of understanding of documentation required for project closeout, with ability to manage and perform quality assurance on documentation flowing from dozens of simultaneous

  • Strong familiarity with Operating Procedures and documentation requirements

  • Proficiency with Smartsheet web application

  • Basic knowledge of CAD or other engineering applications

  • Basic knowledge of CFR 49, Part 192 Regulations

  • Proficiency with PeopleSoft and WMS/ARM software.

  • Familiarity with Power Bi, Oracle, Maximo

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional Traveler (5-20% travel): The incumbent may be required to travel on occasion. Most travel will be day trips to local Contractor office locations. Infrequent trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.

  • This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking

  • Position is located in an office environment but may require monthly site visits to Contractor Offices.

  • Must have reliable transportation (mileage for off-site meetings reimbursed at standard rates)
