Project Engineer-Renewable

Position Overview : The Project Engineer within the Renewable and Resilient Generation Support Organization is responsible for overseeing and managing Georgia Power Company’s (GPC) solar and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) generation facilities. This role involves collaboration with Southern Company Services (SCS) and entails comprehensive project oversight, ensuring successful project completion, and maintaining stakeholder communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Oversight : Represent GPC as the Owner’s Engineer, overseeing up to three projects, including both solar and BESS facilities.

  • Project Completion: Manage the 65 MW Mossy Branch Battery Energy Storage system, including handoff to operations, budget tracking, project unitization, and ribbon-cutting coordination.

  • Leadership Communication: Prepare and deliver project updates to leadership.

  • Scope, Budget, and Schedule Management: Provide input on managing project scope, budget, schedule, and stakeholder interests.

  • Knowledge Expertise: Serve as the GPC knowledge expert on assigned projects.

  • Regulatory Support : Collaborate with SCS to respond to PSC data requests and regulatory filings.

  • Vendor and EPC Screening : Participate with SCS in screening EPC bids and vendor qualifications.

  • Reporting: Support PSC inquiries with written reports or presentations.

  • Training Coordination : Work with SCS to support first responder training for disaster response.

  • Site Tours : Lead or support project site tours for internal or external requests.

  • Media Coordination : Review and provide input on media publications to ensure accuracy.

  • NERC Compliance: Understand and support NERC compliance requirements.

  • Cybersecurity : Ensure cybersecurity requirements are coordinated and compliant.

  • Project Development : Potentially lead day-to-day development, design, and construction for GPC’s solar, battery, or DER projects.

Key Interactions:

The Project Engineer will act as the primary point of contact for OPCO, supporting Southern Company Services Project Teams. This role involves interaction with large, cross-functional teams, interacting with internal and external stakeholders, accounting and budgeting, and maintaining effective communication across all organizational levels.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Self-Build Project Coordination:

  • Support SCS with setting scope, budget, and timeline.

  • Conduct site visits to establish GPC presence and verify work.

  • Review and provide input for all project agreements.

  • Manage internal/external communications regarding projects.

  • Support management reporting.

  • Assist with invoice review, accrual, approval, and coding.

  • Support contractual project close-out requirements.

  • Enforce GWO close-out and work order unitization.

  • Take notes during project calls to track progress.

  • Organize and save key documents to a permanent filing location.

  • Provide capital and O&M budget direction/support from inception through COD.

  • Assist with regulatory filings and reporting as needed.

  • Ensure project compliance with accounting reviews, reporting, procurement, and legal processes.

  • Support project handoff to Fleet Operations and GPC Operations.

  • Ensure proper accounting treatment of employee time, expenses, and project contracts.

  • Monitor and respond to critical after-hours calls and emails.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Overall Project Ownership includes supporting SCS with the following tasks:

  • Project scope, budget, and timeline.

  • Management report outs

  • Invoice review, accrual, approval, and coding.

  • Contractual project close-out requirements.

  • Enforce GWO close-out and work order unitization.

  • Documents by good effective note taking during project calls to track progress.

  • Saves key documents to a permanent organized filing structure

  • Regulatory filing & reporting

  • Upon COD, successful project handoff to Fleet Operations and GPC Operations

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required. Additional consideration for post-graduate degrees and/or industry certifications

Experience Requirements:

  • At least three years of technical experience within Southern Company

  • Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: power delivery, generation, I&C, cyber security, resource planning, TSS, transmission planning, construction, civil design, transmission substation or line design, distribution line design, protection and controls, test engineering, environmental, regulatory or renewable project development

  • Experience in renewable energy and/or storage resource technologies is preferred but not required

  • Contract review experience

  • Contract negotiation experience for engineering, construction and procurement contracts

  • Knowledge of Power Delivery equipment and operations is preferred

  • Regulatory experience responding to data requests and preparing filing documents is preferred but not required

  • Ability to lead, motivate and influence others, regardless of the reporting relationship

  • Demonstrated experience working across multiple organizations to achieve effective outcomes

  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of these areas:

    • complex project management and execution

    • reviewing and enforcing contracts (EPC, RFP, LTSA)

    • coordinating, planning and budgeting of capital and O&M projects
