Transmission Control Center - Power Systesm Coordinator Trainer

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing development and maintenance support of System Operator Training class material and processes including, but not limited to submitting Individual Learning Activity forms, recordkeeping of NERC auditable documentation, and industry involvement opportunities.

This position is necessary to ensure that power system coordinators are properly trained to operate the Southern Company Bulk Electric System reliably, meet the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance requirements, and are adequately trained to utilize state of the art power system analysis tools.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Adult Learning

  • Experience with Adult Learning

  • Previous electric utility transmission experience – Preferred

  • Previous electric utility transmission operating experience (Reliability Coordinator, Balancing Authority, Transmission Operator, Interchange Coordinator, Transmission Planner, Trainer, Energy Management System, Fleet Operations, Trading, Scheduling) – Highly Desirable

  • North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) TO or RC Certification – Required

    • If not already certified, must obtain certification within five months of accepting the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Leadership and good interpersonal skills

    • The successful candidate will be expected to work with other professionals (Trainers, System Operators, Industry Working Groups, and Management) in a team-oriented and sometime stressful environment.
  • Handles multiple tasks at one time, prioritizes work, and provides leadership for training purposes

  • Presentation skills

  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems

  • Comfortable in making decisions often with time constraints

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Comprehensive computer skills to utilize numerous computer applications

    • Microsoft Access Database experience is a plus
  • Broad knowledge of interconnected power system operations

  • Strong communications skills

    • Clear and distinct written and oral communications as this position will interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences

Other Requirements

  • Continuing education on an annual basis to enhance skill sets as a Trainer in the training arena.

  • May require working hours outside normal hours of “eight to five.”

  • Must adhere to Separation Protocol.

  • Ensure that appropriate training processes, controls and procedures are in place to comply with NERC requirements.

  • Understanding Systematic approach to Training using the ADDIE process to incorporate simulation technology in the training curriculum for TCC operators.

  • The Trainer will be expected to relocate his/her permanent residence to within commutable distance of Atlanta, GA area if not already living within commutable distance of metro Atlanta. Relocation assistance may be available.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Orientation of new operators

  • Preparation of new operators for TO Certification

  • Evaluating operators’ Shift Readiness

  • Documentation of Shift Readiness (Peer Review, Operator Synopsis, Management Review)

  • Development/submission of Individual Learning Activity (ILA) to NERC

  • Assisting OPCOs in the development/submission of ILA to NERC

  • Tracking of TCC operators’ continuing education hours

  • Maintenance of the NERC SOCCED Database

  • Maintenance of the PER (SOCO) Database

  • Ensure compliance with NERC PER Reliability Standards

  • Preparation of the annual GPC TCC training curriculum

  • Coordination of SERC System Operator Conferences (SOC) for TCC operators

  • Coordination of the Spring and Fall Restoration Drills

  • Participation in industry programs

    • NATF Practices Groups and Peer Reviews

    • SERC System Operator Working Group (SOWG)
