Basic Function:

Manages commercial risk control (e.g. market, regulatory, compliance risk, and proper accounting treatment) function to ensure risks are identified, characterized, valued, and reported.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, measures, and reports risk created through SouthStar Energy Services' commercial activities.

  • Assesses and evaluates internal control environment; develops creative, practical solutions to address identified risks.

  • Closely monitors internal controls ensuring compliance with all relevant external regulatory requirements.

  • Reviews daily analysis of portfolio financial and risk measurement results.

  • Oversees and reviews Daily Position Report (DPR), mark-to-market P/L, and other reporting requirements.

  • Monitors all trading activity and commercial positions to ensure compliance with Risk Management Policy.

  • Oversees maintenance and performance of daily analysis and validation of forward pricing curves used in mark-to-market valuation.

  • Oversees verification of storage and imbalance position, and valuation; coordinates with Commercial Operations and Accounting.

  • Ensures integrity, validity, and accuracy of transactions captured, scheduled, and reported in risk management system.

  • Serves as subject matter expert (SME) to Information Systems & Technology (IS&T); initiates, coordinates, and facilitates development or enhancements of risk management and energy management systems; provides input for enhancements to Deal Capture, risk reporting, risk analysis, and others; communicates modifications to technical staff.

  • Compiles summarizes, and analyzes ad hoc data requests for internal and management reports; explains P/L shifts and position changes.

  • Serves as liaison with accounting department to ensure accurate reporting of all transactions to minimize adjustment to actual variances; assures system data is accurate and current. Monitors external positions to ensure compliance with Accounting Cashflow Hedge Documentation.

  • Manages staff selection, development, and retention. Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives.

  • Coaches staff, provides feedback, and evaluates performance.

  • Follows organizational policies and procedures, and ensures staff is in compliance

Education and Experience:


  • BA/BS in Accounting, Business

  • 5 - 7 years of experience in risk control in an energy trading environment

  • 7-10 years of management experience

Preferred :

  • MA/MS

  • Energy accounting experience


  • Equivalent academic education and experience



  • MS Word - basic proficiency

  • MS Excel - intermediate proficiency

  • MS PowerPoint - basic proficiency

  • MS Access - basic proficiency

  • Accrual and mark-to-market accounting fundamentals
