Env Affairs Team Leader – Fuel & Chemistry

Please Note; This position is full-time, in the Lab at 2480 Maner Road, Atlanta, GA.

*JOB SUMMARY: *

This position is responsible for providing leadership to a team of laboratory analysts who conduct analyses using a wide variety of complex instrumentation and analytical methodologies related to environmental compliance, process chemistry, fuels analysis and radiochemistry for customers including Generation facilities, Georgia Power and Southern Company Nuclear facilities, and Southern Company affiliates. In addition, the team leader will have a hands-on role of performing analyses and prep methods to support the analysts and backlog.

The team leader implements procedures and controls necessary to provide analytical data that helps the Company meet and exceed environmental compliance with state and federal regulations. Data is used to provide operational support, asset protection, and emergency response.

The position will aid in monitoring all laboratory data and quality control procedures. The incumbent will ensure effective utilization of technical personnel and provide interface with internal and external work groups. Moreover, the position is responsible for fostering a safe and productive work environment by setting and communicating team goals, providing quality performance feedback, and developing a high performing team.

This position will serve as team leader of the fuel and radiochemistry section (5 analysts). The radiochemistry analyses include but are not limited to gamma spectroscopy, gas flow proportional alpha beta counting, and liquid scintillation counting. The fuels section analyses include calorimetry, sulfur, dry weight, XRF and other tests on coal and fuel oil samples.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS in physical/natural science or engineering, minimum of 24 hours of chemistry required.

  • Laboratory experience preferred, but not required

  • Focus on Safety Excellence and wellness to ensure employees follow safe work practices; identify and implement corrective actions for unsafe work conditions.

  • Technical knowledge of ASTM, Standard Methods (SM), and/or EPA analytical methodology preferred.

  • Experience implementing and using ISO 17025 and the NELAC Institute (TNI) Standards is preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience with the ability to set clear goals, define expectations, hold others accountable, enable teams to accomplish goals, and recognize achievement is highly preferred.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach and motivate employees to provide quality analytical data in a timely manner. Ability to develop employees and help them accomplish career goals.

  • Demonstrated leadership with ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the lab’s processes and procedures and to ensure compliance with current and future requirements.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills and the ability to interface with both internal and external groups including laboratory employees, customers, power plants, and regulatory and accreditation agencies.

  • Proven planning and scheduling skills to ensure that projects and tests are completed in a timely manner in accordance with requirements and that workload is distributed equitably.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to foresee future staffing needs and develop quality services to support customers.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Computer proficiency using instrument and data management software.

  • Experience with LIMS software and Environmental Laboratory Accreditation would be a plus.
