Energy Market Research Analyst
This position is responsible for conducting secondary research for Southern Company. The position focuses on defining research objectives based on consultation with business partners (clients or management), gathering information from several sources, synthesizing the information, converting the information into knowledge, and applying the knowledge to enhance our business partners’ decision-making.
The position proactively tracks and understands actions and intentions of competitors as well as observes and explains energy industry trends and market dynamics, especially as may be related to new technologies; and communicates implications to our business partners. The position will collaborate with teammates to perform responsibilities such as evaluating/assessing Southern Company’s potential market opportunities; explaining peer utility and other competitors’ product/service offerings’ successes/failures through competitive intelligence; identifying external factors that shape customers’ attitudes and opinions; and leveraging the department’s subscriptions to several information sources to provide insights on hot topics. The position will work closely with primary research analyst teammates to deliver integrated research deliverables.
Manage small, medium and large-scale secondary research projects
Consult with business partners to help them make enhanced decisions based on industry and research knowledge
Proactively track and communicate implications of industry/market/competitor activities to business partners; explaining the impact these activities could have on Southern Company’s retail marketing efforts
Leverage the Marketing Research Department’s subscriptions to an array of information sources
Conduct market assessments of potential new technologies or product/service offerings
Identify external factors that shape customers’ attitudes and opinions
Work closely with primary research analyst teammates to deliver integrated research deliverables
Perform other tasks as needed to support Marketing Research objectives
B.A./B.S. in engineering, finance, business, communications, or related field is strongly preferred
Master’s Degree is an asset, but is not required
For senior level, 10 years of experience in secondary research, market intelligence, or competitive intelligence field is required
For mid-career, 2 years of experience in secondary research, market intelligence, or competitive intelligence field is preferred
Experience directly related to the energy sector or utility industry is desired, including knowledge of innovative products and services (e.g. services that leverage smart meters, smart grid, automation, renewables, etc.)
Demonstrated knowledge of energy and utility industry issues, operations, and technology is desired
Demonstrated knowledge of finance and/or financial analysis is preferred
Secondary Marketing Research Skills:
Demonstrated ability to develop research questions that will solicit the information needed to make business decisions.
Expertise in information gathering: understands the available resources, conducts business research, leverages analytical tools, retrieves data, uses knowledge of the industry to fill in information gaps, and leverages the network of contacts in the utility industry
Strong analytical skills: able to synthesize and transform information into fact-based theories; interprets and draws conclusions based on seemingly unrelated pieces of information
Basic understanding of primary research options, methodologies, statistical analysis and when they are needed to complement secondary research
Basic knowledge of the complete marketing process (market research, product development/design, product distribution, pricing, promotion/advertising, brand management, sales management, etc.)
Consulting and Communication Skills:
Strong consulting skills needed to build and manage effective working relationships across multiple business units and levels of an organization
Strong collaboration skills required for working on team-based or cross-functional projects
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
