Job Summary:

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Consultant supports Southern Company's efforts to diversify our workforce and create a welcoming and inclusive workplace to better meet the needs of our employees and the customers and communities we serve.

Southern Company is developing a bold, new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy that speaks to the unique needs of our company and the changing demographics of our workforce. The Consultant position will support the implementation of new communications efforts, trainings, and practices that break with industry norms and that will help us realize some ambitious inclusion goals.

Reporting to the DE&I Manager, the Consultant will help execute our DE&I strategy, support communications, training, and development initiatives, and assist with designing and implementing other DE&I projects across the company as needed. The scope of the Consultant’s work will be broad, anticipating and responding to emerging needs relating to the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Job Responsibilities:

Training and Consulting

  • Partner with HR Delivery, Talent Management and other key partners to oversee successful execution of DE&I strategy within Southern Company's Corporate & Services organization

  • Provide principal technical and strategic consulting support related to creating an inclusive work environment, increasing employee representation, engagement and collaborating with supplier diversity and community partners

  • Deliver presentations to business units across the company on DE&I initiatives and topics

  • Design and facilitate trainings on topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion including disability, LGBTQ identities, race, gender, working with Veterans, building and managing diverse teams, psychological safety, unconscious bias, and preventing and responding to bias at work

  • Work with DE&I Manager to create new trainings that address the needs of our internal customers

Communications

  • Design and maintain DE&I intranet site by developing, writing, and collating fresh, creative, and relevant content

  • Design and write company-wide DE&I newsletter

  • Develop annual communications plan to include schedule for company-wide internal media coverage, announcements, and marketing (in partnership with Corporate Communication)

  • Design and edit presentations, webinars, and tools to ensure they are engaging, accessible, and consistent with the DE&I brand

  • Design and edit posters, flyers, and handouts using Adobe Creative Suite or similar design software

  • Assist with other communications and marketing projects as needed

Events and Other Projects

  • Support DE&I Team with other projects as needed

  • Represent the DE&I team on internal committees and project teams as needed

Job Requirements:

DE&I and Consulting Skills

  • Strong understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice concepts including intersectionality, systems of oppression, and implicit bias among others

  • Strong cultural competency in multiple areas of diversity and inclusion including race, gender identity and expression, disability, religion, sexual orientation, military affiliation, and other identity categories

  • Ability to determine the needs of stakeholders and devise tailored solutions to their D&I needs

  • Ability to build relationships and be influential across all levels of an organization that includes employees in technical and corporate roles

  • Ability to think and plan boldly and strategically rather than accept industry practices or norms without question

Training and Facilitation

  • Strong presentation and training skills; ability to convey complex topics in a relatable, sensitive, persuasive, and clear manner to audiences with varying levels of familiarity and comfort with D&I topics

  • Experience with creating trainings and workshops as well as knowledge of how to devise learning outcomes and evaluation methods are highly desirable

Communication and Design Skills

  • Outstanding written communication skills with a track record of experience writing for a professional audience. Experience writing newsletter and website content is highly desirable

  • Experience with graphic design using Adobe Creative Suite or similar software to create flyers, posters, and web graphics is preferred

  • Highly proficient in using creative and accessible design principles to create engaging PowerPoint presentations and other visual aids

  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, and professional manner with internal and external stakeholders

Other

  • Commitment to ongoing learning to stay up to date with emerging trends in D&I and to learn about communities, identities, and cultures other than your own

  • Proficient in Word, Teams, Excel, SharePoint, and other MS Office tools

  • Be reliable, punctual, and organized with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time

  • Ability to travel during normal business hours with occasional overnight trips is essential

  • Note that this role requires the Consultant to telework part of the time. Ability to work effectively from a remote environment is therefore essential.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in humanities, social sciences, or other liberal arts field is preferred

Experience:

  • 2-5 years of experience working in diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice in the non-profit, corporate, government, NGO, or higher education sectors
