Mechanical Engineer II

Summary

Provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the various power generation and transmission facilities owned and operated by NYPA. Engineering responsibilities include inspections, condition assessments, startup and testing, troubleshooting, calculations, design, preparation of detailed fabrication/construction drawings and specifications, inter-discipline and inter-department coordination, engineering support during construction and outage, and equipment/system evaluations for mechanical systems and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to develop modification packages, perform analysis or provide engineered solutions.

  • Develop designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various mechanical equipment and systems to resolve problems or improve existing systems or components.

  • Direct and review mechanical engineering and design and drafting packages.

  • Provide engineering support and oversight during construction or outage activities.

  • Develop 3D computer models and perform analysis of various components and assemblies using computer-based software including ANSYS.

  • Inspect and evaluate vendor technical and physical products to ensure engineering requirements and needs are satisfied.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices, to solve even the most complex engineering problems, and make technical recommendations on design methods and obstacles on a project as well as programmatic level.

  • Extensive knowledge of and a working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.

  • Ability to develop coaching skills for junior engineers.

  • Solid presentation, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to produce clear, concise, complete, and articulate reports.

  • Working knowledge of computer-based engineering modeling and analysis programs, preferred.

  • Highly collaborative and team-oriented, with ability to apply project management skills to build relationships across all levels of stakeholders.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.

  • New York State Professional Engineer License, preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in any of the following areas: hydroelectric and fossil generation equipment and fundamentals, materials, controls, hydraulics, fluid flow, process piping, or piping designs, preferably for utility, commercial or industrial facilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 20% travel primarily within NY State to the operating facilities.

  • Occasional travel (less than 5%) outside of NY State, to other states and internationally for required training or factory inspections.

  • Ability to access all areas of our operating facilities.

  • Driver’s license required.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $110,620 - $152,090. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
