Become a Construction Welder at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you will be responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. As a Construction Welder you will be part of the Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Transmission & Distribution Organization Unit within the Construction Field Forces team. A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Lays out, cuts, shapes, cleans, position, aligns, fits and welds steel, aluminum, cast iron, and alloy components toassemble and install structural forms such as piping systems, electrical equipment, machinery, frame work, pressurevessels and tanks.

  • Sets up and operates electric arc, oxygen-acetylene and other welding equipment.

  • Produces weldments - using techniques such as Shielded Metal Arc, Gas metal Arc, Flux Cored Arc, Tungsten Gas Arc, and Gas welds according to American Society of Mechanical engineers (ASME), American Petroleum Institute (API) and American Welding Society (AWS) code requirements.

  • Stress relieves and tempers metal parts.

  • Grinds down and builds up parts for reconditioning.

  • Works from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.

  • Estimates material requirements.

  • Measures and lays out dimensions angles, arcs, circles, and other shapes to be cut.

  • Uses gas or arc equipment to cut out parts. Works in elevated, confined or other locations.

  • Maintains and repairs welding equipment. Directs and instructs apprentices and helpers.

  • Operates truck and material handling equipment. Rigs material and equipment for lifting and moving. Erects scaffolding, cleans up work area, and works with other crews as work scheduling requires.

Qualifications

The essentials

  • Must have valid Drivers License, with a clean abstract

  • Must successfully be qualified with an ASME certification .

  • Must be willing and able to complete out of town assignments of 60 days or more, with company provided lodging.

The preferred

  • Knowledge of Accident Prevention Rules and First Aid procedures

  • Experience with qualified welding procedures

  • Experience with properties of metals

  • Experience with metal cutting procedures

  • Experience with stress relieving procedures

  • Knowledge of blacksmithing methods

  • Knowledge of rigging and lifting procedures

  • Experience with operation, maintenance and repair of welding equipment

  • Experience with use of power and hand tools and equipment

  • Knowledge of mechanical principles and basic electricity

  • Experience with blueprint reading, drafting procedures to lay out work and shop mathematics

  • Ability to produce certifiable weldments

  • Ability to layout and fabricate parts from blueprints and specifications, use tools and equipment skillfully

  • Ability to maintain certification on ASME

  • Ability to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.

  • Ability to integrate work across relevant areas, develop the business and services to enhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manage risks appropriately, develop and execute business plans, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.

  • Must demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

  • This position has been identified as a North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC/CIP) impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining unescorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available with this position.

  • Position requires extensive travel to any Substation within the SCE service territory and Southern Nevada with extended out of town assignments.

  • Out of town assignments of 60 days and more requiring Company provided lodging are a common occurrence andshould be expected by all applicants

  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email.
